Acanthamoeba keratitis remains a problematic infection, especially for contact lens wearers. Current treatment is not always effective, and Acanthamoeba spp. may persist on contact lenses despite the use of disinfectant. Growth of Acanthamoeba polyphaga in culture medium without bacteria has already been studied (3), but we know of no previous studies of the effect of surface attachment on this...
Acanthamoeba polyphaga mimivirus (APM), a virus of free-living amebae, has reportedly caused human respiratory disease. Using 2 newly developed real-time PCR assays, we screened 496 respiratory specimens from 9 pneumonia-patient populations for APM. This virus was not detected in any specimen, which suggests it is not a common respiratory pathogen.
Campylobacter jejuni is a foodborne pathogen recognized as the leading cause of human bacterial gastroenteritis. The wide use of antibiotics in medicine and in animal husbandry has led to an increased incidence of antibiotic resistance in Campylobacter In addition to a role in multidrug resistance, the Campylobacter CmeABC RND-type efflux pump, which is associated with multidrug resistance (MDR...
A synopsis of the cockroach family Corydiidae in North America (Canada, Mexico and USA) is made. The diversity this region comprises 65 species grouped eight genera three subfamilies. Through revision type material, Myrmecoblatta hebardi Estrada-Álvarez & Guadarrama, 2013 transferred to genus Paralatindia Saussure, 1868; Latindia mexicana 1868 retransferred Compsodes Hebard, 1917; Homoeogam...
The effects of age in culture and the type of medium used for induction of Acanthamoeba polyphaga (Ros) cysts on susceptibilities to polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB; 3 micro g/ml), chlorhexidine digluconate (30 micro g/ml), myristamidopropyl dimethylamine (20 micro g/ml), H(2)O(2) (3%), and two multipurpose contact lens solutions (MPS-1 and MPS-2, based on 1 micro g of PHMB per ml) were exami...
We showed by a laboratory experiment that four different Campylobacter jejuni strains are able to infect the protozoan Acanthamoeba polyphaga. C. jejuni cells survived for longer periods when cocultured with amoebae than when grown in culture alone. The infecting C. jejuni cells aggregated in amoebic vacuoles, in which they were seen to be actively moving. Furthermore, a resuscitation of bacter...
Six pathogenic strains of Naegleria fowleri, two of Acanthamoeba castellanii, and three of Acanthamoeba polyphaga were tested in vitro for susceptibility to a variety of potentially useful therapeutic agents. Minimal motility inhibitory concentrations and minimal inhibitory concentrations were determined by a technique of subculturing pure clones of amoebae in plastic tissue culture chamber sli...
A bibliography of significant taxonomic papers on Elmidae (Coleoptera, Polyphaga, Byrrhoidea), and a checklist of valid species and subspecies and their geographic distributions are provided. Forty-seven genera and 430 valid species are included. Maps show the geographic distribution of the genera by country.
Two species of the Laboubeniales based on the Tibetan collections are described. They are new to the mycological flora of Tibet. Laboulbenia polyphaga found on several parts of Amara majuscula was characterized by having the outer appendages not ramified and simple. Peyritschiella protea obtained on the lower abdomen of Philonthus wuesthoffi, had two perithecia and two antheridia produced on th...
