Colistin resistance in Acinetobacter spp. is increasing, resulting potentially untreatable nosocomial infections. Plasmid-mediated colistin of particular concern due to its low fitness cost and potential transferability other bacterial strains species. This study investigated the mechanism a clinical nosocomialis isolate from Cape Town, South Africa. A colistin-resistant A. was identified blood...

Integration of the Salmonella typhimurium virulence plasmid into the chromosome reduces mouse virulence, serum resistance, and HeLa cell adhesion-invasion while prolonging lag time in minimal medium. The proposed virulence plasmid regulatory element, rsk, partially restores virulence and fully restores the other three phenotypes to wild-type levels. Plasmid curing reduces virulence without affe...

Exopolysaccharide-producing Lactobacillus casei CG11 was isolated from soft, white, homemade cheese. In basal minimal medium, it produces a neutral heteropolysaccharide consisting predominantly of glucose (about 75%) and rhamnose (about 15%). Plasmid curing experiments revealed that exopolysaccharide production by strain CG11 is linked to a plasmid approximately 30 kb in size.

Curing of the hydrogenase-specifying megaplasmid pHG indigenous to strains of the facultative lithoautotrophic bacterium Alcaligenes eutrophus was correlated with a loss of denitrifying ability (Nitd). The retransfer of plasmid pHG1 reconstituted the Nitd phenotype. Plasmid-free mutants were still capable of converting some nitrate to nitrite, but they did not metabolize nitrite under anaerobic...

Loss of K99 and STaP genes from enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli 431 during infection occurred by either plasmid curing or plasmid deletion. These mutants expressed the F41 adhesion and colonized neonatal pigs, but only those mutants that retained STaP caused diarrhea with significant weight loss.

Pediococcus pentosaceus FBB61 and L7230, isolated from cucumber fermentations, produced a bacteriocin, designated pediocin A, which had identical activity spectra against species of Pediococcus, Clostridium, Staphylococcus, and Streptococcus. Both strains possessed a 13.6-megadalton plasmid (pMD136). Plasmid curing experiments suggested that both bacteriocin immunity and production determinants...

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES The multiple drug resistance (MDR) is a serious health problem and major challenge to the global drug discovery programmes. Most of the genetic determinants that confer resistance to antibiotics are located on R-plasmids in bacteria. The present investigation was undertaken to investigate the ability of organic extract of the fruits of Helicteres isora to cure R-plasmids...

Astragalus sinicus (Chinese Milk vetch), a green manure leguminous plant, harbors Mesorhizobium huakuii subsp. rengei strain B3 in the root nodules. The visualization of symbiotic plasmid of strain B3 showed the presence of one sym plasmid of about 425 kbp. Curing of sym plasmid by temperature and acrydine orange was studied. Growing rhizobial cells at high temperature (37 degrees C) or treatin...
