We investigated the effect of exogenously applied 3-deoxyglucosone, a major carbonyl intermediate, on the Maillard reaction. The fluorescence intensity of the product of the reaction of bovine serum albumin with 3-deoxyglucosone was higher than that with an equivalent amount of glucose. Similarly the rate of polymerization of lysozyme in the presence of 3-deoxyglucosone was also greater than wi...

The role of nitric oxide in group B Streptococcus (GBS) infection was evaluated by inhibiting its production with aminoguanidine (AG). AG-treated mice displayed higher mortality rates and more frequent and severe arthritis than controls. Worsening of arthritis correlated with a higher number of GBS cells in the joints and local interleukin-1 beta production.

Acute intraperitoneal (i.p.) administration of N(G)-nitro-L-arginine (NNA, 10, 20 and 40 mg/kg), a non-selective nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitor, significantly and dose-dependently decreased the incidence of convulsions induced by i.p. nicotine (NIC) in mice, whereas 7-nitroindazole (7NI, 50 and 100 mg/kg i.p.), a selective neuronal NOS inhibitor, had a proconvulsant effect. Aminoguanidin...

BACKGROUND This study evaluated the effect of aminoguanidine on liver of diabetic rats subject to physical exercises using histological and histochemical techniques. METHODS THE RATS USED IN THIS STUDY WERE DIVIDED INTO FIVE GROUPS: sedentary control, sedentary diabetic, trained diabetic, sedentary diabetic and treated with aminoguanidine, trained diabetic and treated with aminoguanidine. R...

UNLABELLED BACKGROUNDS AND THE PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Inducible NO synthase activity has been frequently reported in varicose veins. Aminoguanidine is known to inhibit iNOS. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of aminoguanidine on varicocelized rats. METHODS Male Wistar rats were divided into groups A, B, C, D, E, and F (control group). Groups A, B, C, and D rats underwent left va...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Periodontitis is a chronic inflammation that involves nitro-oxidative stress with damaging periodontal structural effects. We aimed to evaluate the consequences of low-dose cimetidine on nitro-oxidative stress in periodontitis. METHODS A rat model of ligature-induced periodontitis was used. After two weeks, the periodontitis groups were treated with cimetidine, aminoguanid...

In this study, we administered aminoguanidine, a relatively selective inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) inhibitor, to study the role of nitric oxide (NO) in LPS-induced decrease in IGF-I and IGFBP-3. Adult male Wistar rats were injected intraperitoneally with LPS (100 microg/kg), aminoguanidine (100 mg/kg), LPS plus aminoguanidine, or saline. Rats were injected at 1730 and 0830 the next da...

The influence of diabetes on endothelial mechanisms implicated in the response of isolated rabbit carotid arteries to 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) was studied. 5-HT induced a concentration-dependent contraction that was potentiated in arteries from diabetic rabbits with respect to that in arteries from control rabbits. Endothelium removal potentiated 5-HT contractions in arteries from both contro...

Aminoguanidine (AG) is a nucleophilic compound that inhibits nonenzymatic, glucose-derived collagen cross-linking in animal tissues. Whether AG can attenuate the accumulation of collagen cross-links in the Biceps femoris muscle of 64-wk-old broiler breeder hens as well as improve meat quality, was investigated. Eighty-four broiler breeder hens (30-wk-old) were divided into four equal groups. Ea...

The elimination of liver-stage malaria parasites by nitric oxide (NO)-producing hepatocytes is regulated by T cells. Both CD8+ and CD4+ T cells, which surround infected hepatocytes, are evident by 24 h after sporozoite challenge in Brown Norway rats previously immunized with irradiated Plasmodium berghei sporozoites. While the number of CD4+ T cells remained the same beyond 24 h postchallenge, ...
