Fully sulfonated poly(styrenesulfonate) brushes were grown from the surface of colloidal silica particles and used to prepare stable trichloroethylene-in-water and heptane-in-water Pickering emulsions. These particles were highly charged and colloidally stable in water but could not be dispersed in trichloroethylene or heptane. Both two-phase (emulsion plus neat water) and three-phase (emulsion...

A versatile new concept is presented for the synthesis of Janus colloids composed of Laponite nanoclay armored poly(divinylbenzene) with an anisotropic surface potential via a double Pickering emulsion template. First, polystyrene or poly(divinylbenzene) colloids stabilized with Laponite nanoclay are synthesized via a Pickering miniemulsion approach. These nanoparticle-stabilized colloids were ...

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are artificial receptors designed for the selective recognition of template molecules. These polymers have been applied in analytical separations, as chemical sensors and in drug delivery system due to their low cost and high stability. In recent years MIP beads, especially those with good selectivity in aqueous solution, have become attractive as they can ...

Crosslinked poly(acrylic acid)-b-polystyrene polymersomes were successfully employed to form a water-in-oil Pickering emulsion and enabled an easy and reversible disassembly due to the pH sensitivity. The side of the polymersomes exposed to the water phase was selectively modified with metal nanoparticles, allowing facile formation of anisotropically modified Janus polymersomes.

Lactobacillus plantarum strain 423 was encapsulated in hollow poly(organosiloxane) microcapsules by templating water-in-oil Pickering emulsion droplets via the interfacial reaction of alkylchlorosilanes. The bacteria were suspended in growth medium or buffer to protect the cells against pH changes during the interfacial reactions with alkylchlorosilanes. The results of this work open up novel a...

Doubly curved nanofiber-reinforced optically transparent composites with low thermal expansion of 15 ppm/k are prepared by hot pressing vacuum-filtered Pickering emulsions of hydrophobic acrylic resin monomer, hydrophilic chitin nanofibers and water. The coalescence of acrylic monomer droplets in the emulsion is prevented by the chitin nanofibers network. This transparent composite has 3D shape...

A wide range of biorelevant applications, particularly in pharmaceutical formulations and the food and cosmetic industries, require the stabilization of two water-soluble blended components which would otherwise form incompatible biphasic mixtures. Such water-in-water emulsions can be achieved using Pickering stabilization, where two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials are particularly effective due...
