The antibiotic moenomycin(Flavomycin®)1'2'3) isolated from Streptomyces bambergiensis and other strains is a surface-active phosphorus-containing glycolipid that contains an UV-chromophore, 2-amino-cyclopentane-dione-l,34), a lipid portion, moeno cinol5) a carbohydrate moiety6) consisting of several sugars (D-glucose, D-glucosamine, D-quinovosamine), and phosphorus linked in ester form. The pre...

Glycerol 1:2-cyclic phosphate is released simultaneously with glycerophosphate when kidney glycerophosphinicocholine diesterase (EC 3.1.4.2) acts on glycerylphosphorylcholine and glycerylphosphorylethanolamine. The percentage of cyclic phosphate ester formed is increased at pH values below the optimum and is decreased when Mg2+ or Ca2+ is added to stimulate the reaction.

The syntheses of four D-myo-inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (InsP(3)) derivatives, incorporating phosphate bioisosteres at the 5-position, are reported. The methyl phosphate ester and sulfate derivatives retain InsP(3) receptor (InsP(3)R) agonist activity; the compounds that possess a methylphosphonate or a carboxymethyl moiety are InsP(3)R antagonists.

Examination of the reaction of 2, 4-dinitrofluorobenzene with thymidine-5' phosphate in detail reveals that the initial product is the 2, 4-dinitrophenyl ester. This reacts with fluoride to produce thymidine-5' phosphorfluoridate. This second reaction provides the basis for the conversion of preformed thymidine-5' 2, 4-dinitrophenyl phosphate to thymidine-5' phosphorofluoridate.

It has been demonstrated (1) that the oxidation-reduction of methylglyoxal to lactic acid occurs in two steps. The first step is a condensation of methylglyoxal and reduced glutathione to a thiol ester which is hydrolytically cleaved to lactic acid and reduced glutathione. It was pointed out that such a mechanism might be operative in other aldehyde-oxidizing systems such as glyceraldehyde phos...

The reaction of furylacrylic acid with cyclopentadiene in toluene gave the expected Diels-Alder endo-and exo-adductsin -1 : 1 ratio. The adducts were separated by iodolactonization method to provide 3-endo-(2'-furyl) bicyclo 12.2.11 hept-5-ene- 2-exo-carboxylic acid and 3-exo-(2'-fury1)bicyclo 12.2.11 hept-5-ene-2-endocarboxylic acid. Esterification of these acids by MeI / HMPA gave the exp...

Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) of four nonencapsulated strains of the human enteric pathogen Campylobacter jejuni were chemically characterized. When applied to two of the strains, extraction by a modified phenol-chloroform-petroleum ether method (H. Brade and C. Galanos, Eur. J. Biochem. 122:233-237, 1982) gave better yields of LPS than did extraction by the conventional hot phenol-water technique....
