Backgrounds: Reconstruction after hemipelvectomy is very important for rehabilitation into society. The pelvis plays an important role for support of the intra-abdominal organs. Methods: We operated 3 cases using fillet flaps with the femoral periosteum for reconstruction of hemipelvectomy defect. Results: It is useful to elevate the flap all around with the femoral periosteum, because the peri...

Free fibula flap is the most common free tissue transfer for maxillary and mandibular reconstructions. The distal part of the harvested bone is transferred, while the proximal part is removed by sub-periosteum dissection. The vascularized periosteum attached to the vascular pedicle has osteogenic potential. 61 patients reconstructed with free fibula flaps were divided in 2 groups: 41 flaps perf...

During the development of sweat gland innervation, interactions with the target tissue induce a change from noradrenergic to cholinergic and peptidergic properties. To determine whether the change in neurotransmitter properties that occurs in the sweat gland innervation occurs more generally in sympathetic neurons, we identified a new target of cholinergic sympathetic neurons in rat, the perios...

Treatment of large bone defects using synthetic scaffolds remain a challenge mainly due to insufficient vascularization. This study is to engineer a vascularized bone graft by integrating a vascularized biomimetic cell-sheet-engineered periosteum (CSEP) and a biodegradable macroporous beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) scaffold. We first cultured human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) to form cell...

The medial periosteal hinge plays a key role in fractures of the head of the humerus, offering mechanical support during and after reduction and maintaining perfusion of the head by the vessels in the posteromedial periosteum. We have investigated the biomechanical properties of the medial periosteum in fractures of the proximal humerus using a standard model in 20 fresh-frozen cadaver specimen...

Introduction After mastoidectomy, patients usually complain of bone depressions in the retroauricular region in the surgical site, especially in procedures that require extensive cortical resections. This causes inconveniences such as difficulty wearing glasses, cleaning, and aesthetics complaints. Objective This study aims to describe a vascularized flap surgical technique that uses the mastoi...

A case of spontaneous bone regeneration after mandibulectomy is presented. The patient was young and had a mandibular resection performed for a large fibroma. Only one of the condyles was preserved. Partial preservation of the periosteum may play an important role in rapid bone regeneration. In this case bone regeneration occurred only in mandibular regions where the periosteum could be preserved.

A feedback mechanism between different tissues in a growing bone is thought to determine the bone's morphogenesis. Cartilage growth strains the surrounding tissues, eliciting alterations of its matrix, which in turn, creates anisotropic stresses, guiding directionality of cartilage growth. The purpose of this study was to evaluate this hypothesis by determining whether collagen fiber directions...

Previous reports have demonstrated very rich innervation pattern in the periosteum. Most of the periosteal fibers were found to be sensory in nature. The aim of this study was to identify the primary sensory neurons that innervate the tibial periosteum in the adult rat and to describe the morphometric features of their perikarya. To this end, an axonal fluorescent carbocyanine tracer, DiI, was ...
