Obesity and saturated fatty acid (SFA) treatment are both associated with skeletal muscle insulin resistance (IR) and increased macrophage infiltration. However, the relative effects of SFA and unsaturated fatty acid (UFA)-activated macrophages on muscle are unknown. Here, macrophages were treated with palmitic acid, palmitoleic acid or both and the effects of the conditioned medium (CM) on C2C...

The relation between consumption of alcohol (established by interview), two of its typical markers (gamma-glutamyltransferase activity and mean corpuscular volume), and the composition of fatty acids in plasma cholesterol esters was investigated in an epidemiological study of 1467 actively employed men aged 35-45. In this group of subjects mean consumption of alcohol was 34.6 (SD 25.2) g/day. P...

BACKGROUND trans Palmitoleic acid (t-16:1n-7, or 16:1 t9 in the δ nomenclature usually applied to trans fatty acids and used herein) arouses great scientific interest because it has been suggested to serve as a biomarker for lower risks of type 2 diabetes and coronary artery disease. OBJECTIVE Although 16:1 t9 has been assumed to derive from dietary sources, we examined the hypothesis that 16...

Obese sheep were used to assess the effects of palmitoleic (C16:1 cis-9) acid infusion on lipogenesis and circulating insulin levels. Infusion of 10 mg/kg body weight (BW)/day C16:1 intravenously in obese sheep reduced (P<0.01) weight gain by 77%. Serum palmitoleic levels increased (P<0.05) in a linear manner with increasing levels of C16:1 infusion. Cis-11 vaccenic (C18:1 cis-11) acid, a known...

The changes in lipid and fatty acid contents after soaking, cooking, germination and fermentation of three white sorghum varieties were studied to improve cereal quality. The results revealed that oil in raw sorghum varieties ranged from 3.58 to 3.91%, respectively and ‘Dorado’ represents the highest variety in oil content. As general trend after germination, oil content was decreased. Fatty ac...

The consumption of high-fat hamburger enriched with SFA and trans-fatty acids may increase risk factors for coronary vascular disease, whereas hamburger enriched with MUFA may have the opposite effect. Ten mildly hypercholesterolaemic men consumed five, 114 g hamburger patties per week for two consecutive phases. Participants consumed high-SFA hamburger (MUFA:SFA = 0.95; produced from pasture-f...

The ciliate Tetrahymena pyriformis synthesizes a wide variety of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. Variations in growth temperature or the addition of sterols such as cholesterol or ergosterol alter the proportions of a number of unsaturated fatty acids. The pattern of substitution is complex when examined on the basis of individual fatty acids. A straightforward explanation is possible, h...
