Morphometric differences in the optical morphology of symbiotic palaemonid shrimps can be observed among species symbiotic with different host organisms. Discriminant functional analysis revealed three distinct groups within the species examined. Of these, bivalve symbionts appear to have an eye design that is solely unique to this host-symbiont grouping, a design that spans across multiple gen...

A small pontoniine shrimp, Typtonoides nieli, from the Chesterfield Islands, New Caledonia, is described and illustrated. Its systematic position is obscure as only a single second pereiopod is preserved. It is possibly related to the spongeassociated genus Typton Costa as the scaphocerite is similarly strongly reduced, but its host remains unknown.

Internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) sequences from wild-type Exopalaemon carinicauda (N = 124) from the East China Sea were amplified and sequenced. Sequences were polymorphic and ranged from 388 to 583 bp in length. The average content of GC in sequences was significantly higher than that of AT. Altogether, 604 mutant sites with 123 haplotypes were detected; 46.7% were polymorphic sites. The ...

The closure of the Isthmus of Panama (about 3.1 million years ago) separated previously continuous populations and created two groups of extant species, which live now in the Pacific and Atlantic drainage systems. This relatively recent event was a trigger to diversification of various species in the Neotropics, nonetheless there are exemplars that do not show sufficient morphologic variability...

Macrobrachium prabhakarani new species is described from the Vamanapuram River, Kerala, S. India. The species shares certain characters with M. scabriculum and M. madhusoodani, while it differs remarkably from these two species in distinctive diagnostic characters: rostral formula 12–14/1–2 with 5–7 postorbital teeth; carapace smooth with distal end of rostrum directed forwards; chelae with nin...
