Solitary rectal ulcer syndrome (SRUS) is an uncommon poorly understood benign disorder of defecation. SRUS may simulate other disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease andneoplasms. Histopathological analysis forms the cornerstone of diagnosis for SRUS.Key histological features include fibromuscular obliteration of the lamina propria with splaying of the muscularis mucosae upward between the...

BACKGROUND Invasive colorectal adenocarcinomas have bundles of eosinophilic spindle cells, which are regarded as myofibroblasts, in their desmoplastic stroma, some of which are continuous with the muscularis mucosa. AIM To investigate the relation between the eosinophilic spindle cells and the muscularis mucosa based on their cytoskeletal phenotypes in early invasive colorectal adenocarcinoma...

An extended family with chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction which affected 11 of 54 members was studied. Patients presented with recurrent intestinal obstruction in childhood or adolescence: eight of the 11 died before the age of 30. Pedigree analysis showed four consanguineous marriages. The patients were all in the fifth generation and had established an autosomal recessive mode of inherita...

Two examples of a hitherto undescribed hamartomatous condition of the small intestine are presented. They consist of fascicles of smooth muscle derived from the muscularis mucosae, bundles of unmyelinated nerve fibres with scattered ganglion cells, and haemangiomatous vessels, occurring focally within a segment of the intestine, and causing stenosis.

BACKGROUND To examine histopathologic features and clinical outcomes of intradiverticular bladder carcinomas. METHODS Twenty-two consecutive patients with intradiverticular bladder carcinoma treated with either endoscopic transurethral resection or partial or radical cystectomy at a single institution between years of 1995 to 2011. Clinicopathologic characteristics and oncologic outcomes of p...

Casts of the lymphatics of the canine small intestine were made by direct injection of a low viscosity methacrylate resin into a large lymphatic in the submucosal layer, and observed under a scanning electron microscope. The lymphatics started with rod-like central lacteals in the villi of the jejunum and leaf-like ones in those of the ileum. The bases of the lacteals were connected by slender ...

Background: Differentiation between the muscularis mucosae (MM) and muscularispropria (MP) of the bladder remains challenging. Objective: To identify MM- and MP-specific antigens that could be of potential value for staging of urothelialcarcinomain a pilot study. Method: The expression of 12 protein antigens in 11 human bladder specimens was examined. There were 5 post radical cystectomy specim...

The isoprostanes, which differ from prostaglandins by the cis orientation of their side chains, are believed to exert their biological effects on either a prostanoid TP receptor or a "unique" isoprostane receptor. Preliminary experiments suggested that canine colonic epithelium possessed no prostanoid TP receptor activity, in contrast to the muscularis mucosae, which responds well to the select...

Pyrrolizidine benzamide (+/-)-2, the bridgehead-methyl analog of SC-53116, was prepared and evaluated for 5-HT(4) agonism activity in the rat tunica muscularis (TMM) mucosae assay. Compound (+/-)-2 has an EC(50) of 449 nM in the TMM assay, as compared to 23 nM for SC-53116, and 66 nM for the racemate of SC-53116.
