BACKGROUND Phage therapy or use of lytic bacteriophages for eliminating bacterial populations has been developed for several aspects of human affairs such as medicine, agriculture and food industries. OBJECTIVES The high load of coliforms of treated wastewater effluents that are discharged into the rivers or agricultural lands is a serious concern of the Iran Department of Environment and the...

conclusions this is the first report on isolation and identification of two novel lytic myovirus and podovirus from zayandehrood river in isfahan that had lytic effects on e. coli ptcc1399 and e. coli sbswf27 strains as well as coliform's population of isfahan municipal wastewater. we suggest that the use of these lytic coliphages for reduction of coliform's population in sewage could be consid...

The characteristics of the slaughterhouse effluents and current wastewater treatment practices in the province of Ontario, Canada are analyzed. Meat processing plants are found to produce large amounts of wastewater due to the slaughtering process and cleaning of their facilities. Furthermore, the composition of the wastewater varies according to the type and number of animals slaughtered and t...

Dissolved, bioavailable phosphorus originating from onsite and municipal wastewater is being recognized as one of the contributors to eutrophication and, more recently, high profile cyanobacteria incidents. This has resulted in very low regulatory limits in some regions, well below 1 mg/L, which are very hard to economically and reliably reach with conventional biological and chemical treatment...

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are widely used for the removal of recalcitrant organic constituents from industrial and municipal wastewater. The aim of this study was to review the use of titanium dioxide/UV light process, hydrogen peroxide/UV light process and Fenton’s reactions in wastewater treatment. The main reactions and the operating parameters (initial concentration of the target ...

A wastewater tertiary treatment system based on membrane ultrafiltration and fed with secondary-treated municipal wastewater was evaluated for its Giardia cyst and Cryptosporidium oocyst removal efficiency. Giardia duodenalis (assemblages A and B) and Cryptosporidium parvum were identified in feed water but were found in filtered water only during occasional failure of the filtration system.

In 1990, the private company Aquafin was founded and assigned with the task of the design, construction, operation and financing of the necessary infrastructure for sewage treatment. One of the challenges Aquafin is facing now is to upgrade the patrimonium of old municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). These plants need to be retrofitted towards strict phosphorus and nitrogen removal con...

High levels of the commonly used, effective bactericide Triclosan was found in three out of five randomly selected human milk samples. It was also found in the bile of fish exposed to municipal wastewater and in wild living fish from the receiving waters of the three wastewater treatment plants.
