Germanium (Ge) nanoparticle-multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) anodes are fabricated through the anchoring of Ge on the surface of electrophoretically pre-deposited MWCNT networks via a thermal evaporation process. This Ge-MWCNT nanocomposite displays a large reversible capacity of over 800 mA h g(-1) at 1 C even after 200 cycles.

The mechanical response of single-walled and multiwalled carbon nanotubes to a series of external Ar atom impacts is examined with classical molecular dynamics simulations. The extent to which the carbon nanotubes deform in the direction perpendicular to their axis is found to depend on the amount of momentum transferred during the collisions. The details of the mechanical response and recovery...

We report the double functionalization of multiwalled carbon nanotube electrodes by two functional pyrene molecules. In combination, an immobilized Ru(II)-based NADH oxidation catalyst and glucose dehydrogenase achieve highly efficient glucose oxidation with low overpotential of -0.10 V and high current densities of 6 mA cm(-2).

A simplified theory of the telescopic oscillations in multiwalled carbon nanotube is developed. The explicit expressions for the telescopic force constants (longitudinal rigidity) and frequencies for telescopic oscillations are derived depending on interacting tubes diameters and lengths. The contribution of small-amplitude telescopic oscillations to low temperature characteristics of nanotubes...

Electrostatically actuated nanoelectromechanical switches based on intershell displacement mechanisms within batch fabricated, bidirectional multiwalled carbon nanotube MWNT bearings are reported. Multiple devices with a 220 nm pitch are constructed within individual MWNT supermolecules. Experimental results on performance metrics including low switching voltages 0.8 to 6 V , repeatability, hys...

We have studied the high-bias transport properties of the different shells that constitute a multiwalled carbon nanotube. The current is shown to be reduced as the shell diameter is decreased or the length is increased. We assign this geometrical dependence to the competition between the electron-phonon scattering process and Zener tunneling.

The synthesis of Fe, Fe-Pt and Fe-Co nanoparticles were carried out using the bottom-up polyol process using standard ari free techniques. Using these nanoparticles, multiwalled carbon nanotubes were synthesized in an atmospheric pressure plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition(APPECVD) process with a mixture of helium and acetylene gases. The APPECVD process produced dense carbon nanotube fo...

Previous energetic considerations have led to the belief that carbon nanotubes (CNTs) of 4 A in diameter are the smallest stable CNTs. Using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, we find that a stable 3 A CNT can be grown inside a multiwalled carbon nanotube. Density functional calculations indicate that the 3 A CNT is the armchair CNT(2,2) with a radial breathing mode at 787 cm(-1)...

A new type of one-dimensional (1D) carbon structure, carbon nanowires (CNWs), was discovered in the cathode deposits prepared by hydrogen arc discharge evaporation of carbon rods. Observation of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) indicates that a CNW consists of a multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWNT) with a long 1D linear carbon chain (C chain) inserted into its innermost tu...
