To discriminate between the effect of charge and temperature as the main cause of structural changes in nanotube-based field-electron emitters, we performed molecular dynamics simulations of charged singleand multiwall carbon nanotubes under realistic conditions. Our results indicate that cap-terminated nanotubes disintegrate abruptly under critical emission conditions. Disintegration, involvin...

In this study, we investigated the chemical functionalization of carboxylated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT–COOH) by 1-Amino-2-naphthol-4-sulfonic acid (ANSA). The functionalized MWCNTs exhibited good aqueous solubility due to the presence of the –OH and – SO3H groups of ANSA. The antimicrobial activity of the MWCNT–COOH as well as its functionalized multiwall nanotube MWCNT-CO-2-(1-amino...

Buckypapers are thin sheets of randomly entangled carbon nanotubes, which are highly porous networks. They are strong candidates for a number of applications, such as reinforcing materials for composites. In this work, buckypapers were produced from multiwall carbon nanotubes, pre-treated by two different chemical processes, either an oxidation or an epoxidation reaction. Properties, such as po...

We have developed a model for the calculation of van der Waals force for layered systems with axial symmetry. Our result can be applied to compute the cohesion of a carbon nanotube to a substrate, the cohesion between nanotubes, and between shells of multiwall nanotubes. We have obtained unusal power laws for the distance dependence of the many-body van der Waals potential.

The analytical expressions for the van der Waals potential energy and force between two crossed carbon nanotubes are presented. The Lennard-Jones potential between pairs of carbon atoms and the smeared-out approximation suggested by L. A. Girifalco (J. Phys. Chem. 1992, 96, 858) were used. The exact formula is expressed in terms of rational and elliptical functions. The potential and force for ...

The carbon nanotube-liquid-crystal (CNT-LC) nanophotonic device is a class of device based on the hybrid combination of a sparse array of multiwall carbon nanotube electrodes grown on a silicon surface in a liquid-crystal cell. The multiwall carbon nanotubes act as individual electrode sites that spawn an electric-field profile, dictating the refractive index profile within the liquid crystal a...

Understanding the nature of interactions between engineered nanomaterials and plants is crucial in comprehending the impact of nanotechnology on the environment and agriculture with a focus on toxicity concerns, plant disease treatment, and genetic engineering. To date, little progress has been made in studying nanoparticle-plant interactions at single nanoparticle and genetic levels. Here, we ...

A facile method for the functionalization of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) by photopolymerization of 5-mercapto-2,2'-bithiophene modified metal (Au or Ag) nanoparticles on the surface of the MWCNT is developed.

Covalent surface modification of multiwall carbon nanotubes leads to enhanced nanotube dispersion in the polymer. Despite this, the mechanical properties of electrospun fibers made of polymethylmethacrylate containing surface modified nanotubes generally fall below those of fibers with pristine nanotubes, sometimes below those of pure polymer fibers. We show that covalent functionalization prod...

Different types of crystalline carbon nanomaterials were used to reinforce polyaniline for use in electromechanical bilayer bending actuators. The objective is to analyze how the different graphitic structures of the nanocarbons affect and improve the in situ polymerized polyaniline composites and their subsequent actuator behavior. The nanocarbons investigated were multiwalled carbon nanotubes...
