Real-time systems like pervasive computing have to complete executing a task within the predetermined time while ensuring that the execution results are logically correct. Such systems require intelligent scheduling methods that can adequately promptly distribute the given tasks to a processor(s). In this paper, we propose LSTR (Least Slack Time Rate first), a new and simple scheduling algorith...

Quantum photonic system has made remarkable achievements in computing and communication. Serving as quantum information carriers, photons are flying qubits robust against decoherence, emerging a desirable platform to make processor reality. However, with system's complexity functionality scaling up, the requirements for stability, programmability, manufacturability will be high demand. Integrat...

High performance programmable logic controllers(PLCs) are time critical systems that require deadline-guaranteed response time. This paper describes a processor and network scheduling method for real-time PLCs supporting networkbased I/O systems and multi-tasking facilities. This enhances schedulability under the pre-de ned response time constraints, by adjusting the period as well as the relea...

We show that no algorithm exists for deciding whether a nite task for three or more processors is wait-free solvable in the asyn-chronous read-write shared-memory model. This impossibility result implies that there is no constructive (recursive) characterization of wait-free solvable tasks. It also applies to other shared-memory models of distributed computing, such as the comparison-based model.

Recent FPGA architectures have shown an increased emphasis on run-time reconfiguration, or the ability to rapidly change the functionality of the FPGA to sequentially accommodate large processing tasks. In addition, partial reconfiguration allows for the reconfiguration of a portion of the FPGA while the remainder is running. These two features enable the use of reconfigurable computing in high...

We consider the problem of load balancing in dynamic distributed systems in cases where new incoming tasks can make use of old information. For example, consider a multi-processor system where incoming tasks with exponentially distributed service requirements arrive as a Poisson process, the tasks must choose a processor for service, and a task knows when making this choice the processor loads ...

Dynamic voltage/frequency scaling is an effective approach to reduce energy consumption at run-time for microprocessors. With the recent advances of CMOS technology, it is possible to integrate variable speed/voltage processor (VSP) cores into a system-on-chip (SoC) without causing significant cost and space overheads. Given the amount of workload for one processor, a multi-VSP system can alloc...
