Migration patterns of nutrient elements, viz. (59)Fe, (54)Mn, (65)Zn, and (86)Rb, supplied to young corn (Zea mays) leaves were studied using a modified chromatogram scanner. It was found that the isotopes supplied to one-half of the leaf did not migrate to the other side across the midrib, but moved generally toward the base of the applied part of the leaf.

Brown midrib sorghum · sudangrass is attracting attention in the north-eastern USA because of its ability to produce acceptable forage yields on marginal corn ground. Other potential advantages include conservation of soil on highly erosive ground, the possibility to spread manure midsummer (after first cutting) when runoff risk is minimal, greatly reduced needs for herbicides and the potential...

Banana bunchy top disease (BBTD), caused by a Bunchy Top Virus (BBTV), is the most devastating viral of bananas. The genome multipartite BBTV about 1 Kb in size and comprises six circular single-stranded (ss) DNA components, namely DNA-R, C, S, M, U3, N. Gene expression viruses highly flexible due to variations copy number transcript levels individual genomic components. This enables them adapt...

Cycloheximide inhibits polar indoleacetic acid transport in midrib tissues of leaves of citrus (Citrus sinensis [L.] Osbeck) and poplar (Populus deltoides Bartr.) as measured by the donor-receiver agar cylinder technique. It appears that the mechanism of auxin transport inhibition by cycloheximide consists in arresting protein synthesis and not in the disruption of energy flow. The interpretati...

Leaf venation is a showcase of plant diversity, ranging from the grid-like network in grasses, to a wide variety of dendritic systems in other angiosperms. A principal function of the venation is to deliver water; however, a hydraulic significance has never been demonstrated for contrasting major venation architectures, including the most basic dichotomy, "pinnate" and "palmate" systems. We hyp...

The banana aphid, Pentalonia nigronervosa Coquerel, is present worldwide where banana (Musa spp.) is grown. It is the vector of Banana bunchy top virus (Nanoviridae, Babuvirus), the etiological agent of banana bunchy top disease, currently the most important constraint for banana producers in Hawaii. P. nigronervosa is not well studied, and effects of temperature on its growth and reproduction ...
