We report self-pulsation in an erbium-doped silica toroidal microcavity laser coupled to a tapered fiber and investigate the effects of pump power and taper-cavity coupling condition on the dynamic behaviors of the pulse train. The microcavity is pumped at 1444.8 nm, and lasing occurs at 1560.2 nm with a threshold of 12 microW. Experimental results are interpreted within the framework of ion-pa...

We revisit the exciton mechanism of superconductivity in the framework of microcavity physics, replacing virtual excitons as a binding agent of Cooper pairs by excitations of an exciton-polariton Bose-Einstein condensate. We consider a model microcavity where a quantum well with a two-dimensional electron gas is sandwiched between two undoped quantum wells, where a polariton condensate is forme...

An electrically injected InAs/GaAs self-organized quantum-dot photonic crystal microcavity light-emitting diode operating at 1.04 mm is demonstrated. Light–current characteristics are obtained for devices with twoand five-defect period cavities with maximum light output of 0.17 mW measured in the surface-normal direction. Near-field images were also obtained for an injection current of 8.35 mA,...

We report on a hitherto unexplored application of squeezed light: for quantum-enhancement of mechanical transduction sensitivity in microcavity optomechanics. Using a toroidal silica microcavity, we experimentally demonstrate measurement of the transduced phase modulation signal in the frequency range 4-5.8 MHz with a sensitivity -0.72(±0.01) dB below the shot noise level. This is achieved for ...

In this work an Intrinsic Fabry-Perot Interferometer (IFPI) based on an air-microcavity is presented. Here the air microcavity, with silica walls, is formed at a segment of a hollow core photonic crystal fiber (HCPCF), which is fusion spliced with a single mode fiber (SMF). Moreover, the spectral response of the IFPI is experimentally characterized and some results are provided. Finally, the vi...

Modified spontaneous emission properties in the presence of confined photon modes inside the three-dimensional (3-D.) optical microcavities are demonstrated. Self-formed pyramidal-shaped semiconductor structures fabricated by selective-area growth technique are utilized as an optical microcavity in which discrete photon modes are generated. Noticeable modification of spontaneous emission from a...

A method for the dense integration of high sensitivity photonic crystal (PC) waveguide based biosensors is proposed and experimentally demonstrated on a silicon platform. By connecting an additional PC waveguide filter to a PC microcavity sensor in series, a transmission passband is created, containing the resonances of the PC microcavity for sensing purpose. With proper engineering of the pass...

We investigate the properties of high-Q, wide freespectral-range semiconductor microcavity ring and disk resonators coupled to submicron-width waveguides. Key optical design parameters are characterized using finite-difference timedomain (FDTD) solutions of the full-wave Maxwell’s equations. We report coupling efficiencies and resonant frequencies that include the effects of waveguide dispersio...

The emission properties of a porous silicon layer placed in an optical microcavity is investigated by photoluminescence and time resolved photoluminescence measurements. The microcavity is formed by an all porous silicon Fabry-Perot filter made by two distributed Bragg reflectors separated by a h or h/2 porous silicon layer. Our main findings are that the spontaneous emission spectrum is drasti...

Microcavity polaritons are composite half-light half-matter quasiparticles, which have recently been demonstrated to exhibit rich physical properties, such as nonequilibrium condensation, parametric scattering and superfluidity. At the same time, polaritons have important advantages over photons for information processing, since their excitonic component leads to weaker diffraction and stronger...
