The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro antifungal activity of Schinus terebinthifolius (Brazilian pepper tree) tincture on planktonic Candida tropicalis (ATCC 40042), which is a microorganism associated to oral cavity infections. Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Fungicidal Concentration (MFC) were determined through the microdilution technique. Possible action of t...

Microbial fuel cell (MFC) sensor exhibits attractive prospects for real-time monitoring of nitrate (NO3-) in water, with unique advantages self-powering and simple structure; but its stability sensitivity are unsatisfactory. In an attempt to address the limitations, here we employed open-circuit MFC (O-MFC) NO3- compared a conventional closed-circuit (C-MFC) sensor. The O-MFC was confirmed when...

Two different microbial fuel cell (MFC) configurations were investigated for electricity production from ethanol and methanol: a two-chambered, aqueous-cathode MFC; and a single-chamber direct-air cathode MFC. Electricity was generated in the two-chamber system at a maximum power density typical of this system (40+/-2 mW/m2) and a Coulombic efficiency (CE) ranging from 42% to 61% using ethanol....

Developing a novel vaccine that can be applied against multiple strains of influenza virus is of utmost importance to human health. Previously, we demonstrated that the intranasal introduction of Fc-fused IL-7 (IL-7-mFc), a long-acting cytokine fusion protein, confers long-lasting prophylaxis against multiple strains of influenza A virus (IAV) by inducing the development of lung-resident memory...

Wastewater has high potential as an energy source. Therefore, it is important to recover even the smallest part of this energy, e.g., in microbial fuel cells (MFCs). The obtained electricity production depends on process rate electrodes. In MFC, microorganisms are catalyst, and cathode usually made carbon material (e.g., with addition Pt). To increase MFC efficiency (and reduce costs by reducin...

Impedance changes of the anode, cathode and solution were examined for an air-cathode microbial fuel cell (MFC) under varying conditions. An MFC inoculated with a pre-enriched microbial culture resulted in a startup time of less than ten days. Over this period, the anode impedance decreased below the cathode impedance, suggesting a cathode-limited power output. Increasing the anode flow rate di...

The aim of the present study was to construct the eukaryotic expression vector pcDNA3.1/15-PGDH. The vector was used to transfect mouse murine forestomach carcinoma (MFC) cancer cells and observe the effects of 15-hydroxyprostaglandin dehydrogenase (15-PGDH) on the proliferation of MFC. pcDNA3.1/15-PGDH was constructed using gene recombination technology and the vector was used to transfect MFC...

A single-chamber microbial fuel cell (MFC) was used to reduce 10 chemicals associated with odors by 99.76% (from 422 +/- 23 mug/ml) and three volatile organic acids (acetate, butyrate, and propionate) by >99%. The MFC produced a maximum of 228 mW/m(2) and removed 84% of the organic matter in 260 h. MFCs were therefore effective at both treatment and electricity generation.

The measurement of electricity generation from an air-cathode microbial fuel cell (MFC) with a mixed bacteria culture at different pH showed that this MFC could tolerate an initial (feed solution) pH as high as 10. The optimal initial pH was between 8 and 10 with higher current generation compared to lower or higher pH. The bacterial metabolism exhibited a buffer effect and changed the electrol...

Changes in metabolism and cellular physiology of facultative anaerobes during oxygen exposure can be substantial, but little is known about how these changes connect with electrical current output from an operating microbial fuel cell (MFC). A high-throughput voltage based screening assay (VBSA) was used to correlate current output from a MFC containing Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 to carbon sour...
