1. Additional evidence is presented in support of the view which postulates a close chemical and biologic relation between the active ingredients in poison ivy and Japan lac. 2. Biologic evidence, based on the use of the patch test in man, is presented in support of the view that the active ingredient in poison ivy is a catechol derivative with a long, unsaturated side-chain in the 3-position. ...

Recent investigations demonstrated that the reaction of odor-active thiols such as 2-furfurylthiol with thermally generated chlorogenic acid degradation products is responsible for the rapid aroma staling of coffee beverages. To get a clear understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying this aroma staling, the existence of putative phenol/thiol conjugates needs to be verified in coffee. T...

Human catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT, EC 2.1.1.6) catalyzes the transfer of the methyl group to a variety of endogenous and exogenous catechol substrates using S-adenosyl-L-methionine as the methyl donor. This enzymatic O-methylation plays an important role in the inactivation of biologically-active and toxic catechols. A number of studies in recent years have sought to characterize the pol...

The aim of this study was investigation of prevention of thermal degradation of the red currant juice anthocyanins by addition of different phenolic compounds (catechol, 4-methyl catechol, catechin, chlorogenic acid and gallic acid). Phenolic compounds were added in 50:1 and 100:1 copigment:pigment molar ratio. Red currant juice samples were heated at 30, 50, 70 and 90 °C for 1 hour. Thermal de...

The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of catechol and phenol added to culture media separately and with glucose as an additional, easily-degradable carbon source on fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) composition in Pseudomonas vesicularis. Simultaneously, the degradation rates of aromatic substrates used were investigated in single and binary substrate systems. Both catechol and phenol t...

Green tea (C. sinensis) extract (GTE) dose dependently produced reversal of despair in normal, reserpinised and diabetic mice, thereby demonstrating an antidepressant effect. Although the exact mechanism is yet to be explored, the possible inhibition of catechol-o-methyl transferase and monoamine oxidase enzymes may be responsible for antidepressant activity of GTE.

The specific activity of mouse neuroblastoma acetylcholinesterase (EC 3.1.1.7) increased 25-fold when the rate of cell division was restricted. The results show that acetylcholinesterase activity is regulated in neuroblastoma cells and that the regulatory mechanism is inversely related to the rate of cell division. Under the same conditions the specific activity of catechol-O-methyl transferase...
