Different techniques for fabricating long-range plasmonic metallo-dielectric waveguides are discussed. The approaches depend strongly on the material system in use. Specific results are presented for SU8 and PDMS.
We proposed using metal-insulator-metal (MIM) nanorod arrays for subwavelength imaging to improve the resolution based on the notable ability of field confinement of the MIM nanorods. The field distribution of a single Au-SiO(2)-Au nanorod, coupling between two nanorods and image transfer of shaped dipole sources through nanorod arrays were investigated by using the finite-difference time-domai...
Lightweight ceramic-metal combinations are one option for advanced vehicle and other structural applications. These structures can require the fabrication of large area arrays of ceramic tiles on a metallic backing. However, the process of fabricating a combination of lightweight ceramics and metals is complicated by the need to bond these very dissimilar materials together. For severe applicat...
Metal ceramic partial fixed dental prostheses have been commonly used for the replacement of missing teeth for many years. Because of an increase in the price of gold, base metal alloys have been the choice of alloy for the fabrication of metal ceramic restorations in many dental clinics. Some major disadvantages of base metals are their corrosion and the dark coloration they may cause at the c...
I thank Dr. Tony Pensak for his interest and comments on my article on gingival response to crowns.1,2 Dr. Pensak is suggesting that the poor gingival response of the 2 maxillary central incisors to the metalceramic crowns (Fig. 1) had more to do with the metallic content of these crowns than their marginal fit and contour. The literature is rich with evidence of longterm success and longevity ...
In a recent article [Opt. Lett.34, 2507 (2009)], the authors concluded that the imaginary part of the complex conductivity sigma of an AlInN film was negative. However, this result was obtained using an approximation that is not applicable in this case. Using the correct equation, the data can be well described with a positive imaginary part of sigma.
The distribution of local charge (DLC) excesses in metallic alloys, previously obtained as a result of the analysis of order N electronic structure calculations, is derived from a variational principle. A phenomenological charge-excess functional theory is obtained which is determined by three concentration dependent, material specific parameters that can be obtained from ab initio calculations...
BACKGROUND Recasting the base metal alloys is done as a routine procedure in the dental laboratories whenever there is casting failure or to decrease the unit cost of a fixed partial denture. However, this procedure may affect the metal ceramic bond. Furthermore, it is unclear, as to which test closely predicts the bond strength of metal-ceramic interface. The aim was to compare the bond streng...
This review deals with the processing and properties of novel lightweight metal matrix composites. Conventionally, hard and strong ceramic particles are used as reinforcement to fabricate metal matrix composites (MMCs). However, the poor mechanical properties associated with the interfacial de-cohesion and undesirable reactions at (ceramic) particle–(metallic) matrix interface represent major d...
