A total of 4,604 bacterial strains isolated from the sediments of Minamata Bay and nearby low-level-mercury stations (control stations) were screened for the ability to volatilize mercury from inorganic and organic mercurial compounds. The strains that volatilize mercury from several kinds of organomercurials were found only in the sediments of Minamata Bay.
Mercury is an established worldwide environmental pollutant with well-known toxicity affecting neurodevelopment in humans, but the molecular basis of cytotoxicity and the detoxification procedure are still unclear. Here we examined the involvement of the canonical transient receptor potential (TRPC) channel in the mercury-induced cytotoxicity and the potential detoxification strategy. Whole-cel...
background: contagion of aquatic ecosystems to heavy metals especially mercury (hg) has risen concerns about healthiness of marine organisms. organic mercury compounds are highly toxic for animals, and its detection in various samples is frequently needed. in present study we have described a new method for measurement of organic mercury and total mercury concentration in great cormorants (phal...
Mercury at low concentrations represents a major hazard to microorganisms. Inorganic mercury has been reported to produce harmful eects at 5 lg/l in a culture medium. Organomercury compounds can exert the same eect at concentrations 10 times lower than this. The organic forms of mercury are generally more toxic to aquatic organisms and birds than the inorganic forms. Aquatic plants are aecte...
Mercury exists naturally and as a man-made contaminant. The release of processed mercury can lead to a progressive increase in the amount of atmospheric mercury, which enters the atmospheric-soil-water distribution cycles where it can remain in circulation for years. Mercury poisoning is the result of exposure to mercury or mercury compounds resulting in various toxic effects depend on its chem...
The ability to accurately determine metal mercury content and identify different mercury species in solid samples is essential for developing remediation and control strategies. The aim of the present study is to characterize mercury compounds based on thermal desorption. For this purpose a series of samples was prepared and the operational parameters-heating velocity, carrier gas-were optimize...
The use of mercuric chloride as an histological fixative was associated with high environmental atmospheric concentrations of mercury vapour (up to 0-5 nmol/l) as well as mercury compounds (total Hg to 1-0 nmol/l). Technicians exposed to this environment showed increased urinary mercury (median value 265 nmol/24h) and protein outputs (median value 117 mg protein/24h). Routine control measures, ...
This paper presents a discussion of fundamental problems of the speciation analytics of organometallic compounds occurring at low concentration levels in samples involving a complex matrix. It points out differences in analytical procedures for speciation analyses and those for determinations of total contents of a metal present in the studied sample in a number of different species.
