We view a dataset of points or samples as having an underlying, yet unspecified, tree structure and exploit this assumption in learning problems. Such a tree structure assumption is equivalent to treating a dataset as being tree dependent identically distributed or tdid and preserves exchangeability. This extends traditional iid assumptions on data since each datum can be sampled sequentially a...

Spirometric indices, lung volumes, maximum voluntary ventilation, and maximum inspiratory and expiratory pressures were measured in 44 adolescents with mild idiopathic scoliosis (spinal curvature less than 30 degrees). All were symptom free, but six (13.6%) showed a restrictive defect with forced vital capacity less than 80% of predicted. In 12 subjects (27.3%) maximum voluntary ventilation was...

The deeation-innation convex optimization method is introduced. One result is a simple and practical approximation algorithm for the max cut problem based on the semideenite programming relaxation and analysis of Goemans and Williamson. Another consequence is a closed-form expression for the maximum-determinant completion of a positive deenite band matrix. Local and global convergence results a...

OBJECTIVE To investigate the significance of respiratory muscle weakness in chronic heart failure and its relation both to maximum oxygen consumption during cardiopulmonary exercise testing and to skeletal muscle (quadriceps) strength. SUBJECTS Seven healthy men aged 54.9 (SEM 4.3) years and 20 men with chronic heart failure aged 61.4 (1.6) years (P = 0.20) with radionuclide left ventricular ...

This paper studies the computationally diicult problem of nding a largest j-dimensional simplex in a given d-dimensional cube. The case in which j = d is of special interest, for it is equivalent to the Hadamard maximum determinant problem; it has been solved for innnitely many values of d but not for d = 14. (The subcase in which j = d 3 (mod 4) subsumes the famous problem on the existence of ...

This paper describes an edge detection method based on surface-derived attributes. The surface-derived attributes are widely used in the interpretation ofseismic datain two main categories: (1) derivative attributes including the dip angle and the azimuth; (2) derivative attributes including curvature attributes.    In general, the magnitude of the normal curvature of a surface (curvature attri...

BACKGROUND Walking dysfunctions persist following poststroke rehabilitation. A major limitation of current rehabilitation efforts is the inability to identify modifiable deficits that, when improved, will result in the recovery of walking function. Previous studies have relied on cross-sectional analyses to identify deficits to target during walking rehabilitation; however, these studies did no...

This paper presents a worst-case pairwise codeword error probability analysis, under arbitrary block fading, for wireless communication systems with multiple transmit and receive antennas. Our results generalize the Rayleigh-fading space-time code design criteria (full rank and maximum determinant) to arbitrary fading. Keywords— Space-time codes, multiple transmit antennas, product distance.

Let T be a tree, A its adjacency matrix, and a scalar. We describe a linear-time algorithm for reducing the matrix In +A. Applications include computing the rank of A, nding a maximum matching in T , computing the rank and determinant of the associated neighborhood matrix, and computing the characteristic polynomial of A.

This paper considers an amplify–quantize–forward (AQF) relay channel withM-ary quadrature amplitude modulation, where the implements amplification for received signal and a uniform quantization each of real imaginary parts amplified version. Two step-size determinant methods affected by power constraint at are proposed deriving mean square error quantized signal. Given step size q...
