In Belgium, decreasing macrolide, lincosamide, streptogramins B, and tetracycline use during 1997-2007 correlated significantly with decreasing macrolide-resistant Streptococcus pyogenes during 1999-2009. Maintaining drug use below a critical threshold corresponded with low-level macrolide-resistant S. pyogenes and an increased number of erm(A)-harboring emm77 S. pyogenes with low fitness costs.

A microbiological diagnosis of pharyngitis is essential for confirmation of Group A Streptococci. Macrolide is given to those patients who are allergic to Penicillin. Various rates of Macrolide resistance of Streptococcus pyogenes are reported worldwide. A total of 400 children was included in the study. All samples were processed by standard Microbiological protocol. Antibiotic susceptibility ...

BACKGROUND Macrolide antibiotics have anti-inflammatory effects, and long-term administration may reduce chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbations. OBJECTIVE To investigate the effects of long-term treatment of macrolide therapy for COPD. METHODS We searched the PubMed and Embase databases to identify randomized controlled trials that evaluated the effect of macrolide thera...

OBJECTIVES Macrolide resistant Treponema pallidum strains, caused by mutations in the 23S ribosomal RNA (23S rRNA) gene, are widespread and increasingly prevalent. The authors aimed to establish the strain types of T pallidum isolated from patients in a London sexual health centre and to determine the frequency of macrolide resistance. METHODS T pallidum DNA from blood and ulcer samples were ...

OBJECTIVE Macrolide antibiotics are reported to modulate the production of cytokines in various type of cells. We examined the effect of macrolide antibiotics on inflammatory cytokines (IL-6 and IL-8) and chemical mediator (PGE(2)) and also matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) productions by human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs) treated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS). METHODS The effect of macrolide a...

The available evidence for long-term, low-dose treatment with 14- and 15-membered ring macrolides in non-cystic fibrosis (CF) bronchiectasis, COPD, chronic sinusitis, and asthma is reviewed with special attention to possible adverse effects and the emergence of resistance during long-term macrolide treatment. Macrolide maintenance therapy has been proven to be of benefit in diffuse panbronchiol...

Nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) is one of the most common pathogens in chronic airway infections and exacerbation. The hallmark of chronic respiratory diseases, including cystic fibrosis, diffuse panbronchiolitis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, is mucin overproduction. Prolonged macrolide antibiotic therapy at low doses is known to improve clinical outcome in patients with ...

Resistance to macrolides and lincosamides is increasingly reported in clinical isolates of gram-positive bacteria. The multiplicity of mechanisms of resistance, which include ribosomal modification, efflux of the antibiotic, and drug inactivation, results in a variety of phenotypes of resistance. There is controversy concerning the clinical relevance of in vitro macrolide resistance. Recent dat...

Mycoplasma genitalium is a cause of non-gonoccocal urethritis (NGU) in men and cervicitis and pelvic inflammatory disease in women. Recent international data also indicated that the first line treatment, 1 gram stat azithromycin therapy, for M. genitalium is becoming less effective, with the corresponding emergence of macrolide resistant strains. Increasing failure rates of azithromycin for M. ...

Streptococcus pneumoniae is a common commensal and an opportunistic pathogen. Suspected pneumococcal upper respiratory infections and pneumonia are often treated with macrolide antibiotics. Macrolides are bacteriostatic antibiotics and inhibit protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. The widespread use of macrolides is associated with increased macrolide resistance in S. pneum...
