Pleomorphic lobular carcinoma of the breast has been identified as a histological variant of infiltrating lobular carcinoma (ILC) with poor prognosis. Thus, cytological recognition of this tumour is important. It is characterized by pleomorphism to a degree that contrasts with the cytologic uniformity of classic ILC. Due to this feature it is often misinterpreted as infiltrating ductal carcinom...
Immunohistochemistry using antibodies to cytokeratin 8 can serve as a valuable diagnostic tool for the differentiation of lobular from ductal carcinomas of the breast. In contrast with ductal carcinomas, which exhibit a peripheral-predominant immunostaining pattern, adjacent tumor cells “molding” to each other, lobular carcinomas exhibit a ring-like perinuclear immunostaining pattern, creating ...
BACKGROUND Important differences in the contributions of certain exposures to the risks of ductal versus lobular breast carcinomas have been observed, but few studies have evaluated the relationships between established breast cancer risk factors and other histologic types. METHODS Information on family history of cancer and reproductive, hormonal, anthropometric, and lifestyle characteristic...
BACKGROUND Carcinoma of the male breast is responsible for less than 1% of all malignancies in men but the incidence is rising. Invasive ductal carcinoma is the most common histological subtype while invasive lobular carcinoma is responsible for only 1.5% of the total cases of which pleomorpic lobular carcinoma is an extremely rare variant. We report the case of a gentleman with node positive, ...
OBJECTIVES Managing urge-incontinence after metastatic lobular carcinoma of the breast into the bladder. MATERIAL AND METHODS Case report and review of the pertinent English language literature. RESULTS Conservative management with tamoxifen resulted in clinical and partial radiological remission and the urge-incontinence disappeared. CONCLUSION A conservative mode of treatment is possibl...
BACKGROUND Treatment decisions in breast cancer depend on TNM classification and the assessment of additional variables with have an impact on survival. We examined whether histological subtyping breast cancer as either ductal or lobular is related to disease outcome. PATIENTS AND METHODS We examined a large data base of 14198 breast cancer patients. RESULTS Histological sub-classification ...
Accurate estimation of disease extent and margin status is critical when evaluating partial mastectomy cases because both are predictors of recurrence. No published standards exist for processing specimens involved by invasive carcinoma, presumably because such cases have a gross lesion. We retrospectively studied 100 partial mastectomy cases and concluded that a standardized tissue mapping pro...
This report describes a solitary orbital metastasis of lobular carcinoma in a woman 35 years after diagnosis of right breast lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS). After partial response to anastrozole, the patient was treated with proton radiotherapy to 45 cobalt gray equivalents (CGE) with an excellent response. We additionally discuss treatment strategies for this rare metastatic site.
