OBJECTIVE To assess the efficacy of a line-probe assay delta (LiPA) as rapid diagnostic test for early detection of drug-resistant tuberculosis compared to conventional susceptibility methods in Pakistan. METHODS Resistance to rifampicin (RIF) and isoniazid (INH) in 108 smear-positive pulmonary tuberculosis samples was detected using a line-probe assay [GenoType MTBDRplus (Hain Lifescience, G...

The changes in viral load and CD4(+) count at 3 and 6 months in a group of 166 HIV-infected patients was evaluated. The new therapy was chosen based on the medical history procedures for 70 patients, and in 96 patients it was guided by the partial or complete result of the line probe assay (LiPA) HIV RT and Protease resistance tests. The absolute difference from the baseline of the log viral lo...

In Nigeria, one of the highest tuberculosis (TB) burdened nations, sputum smear microscopy is routinely employed for TB diagnosis at Directly Observed Treatment Short-Course (DOTS) Centers. This diagnostic algorithm does not differentiate Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTC) from nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM). Between December 2008 and January 2009, consecutive patients diagnosed with T...

The accuracy of LiPA 2.0 for hepatitis C virus 1 (HCV-1) subtype classification was analyzed. LiPA 2.0 genotype results from 101 HCV-1-infected patients were compared to genotype findings determined by direct core sequencing. Eleven (11%) samples were misclassified. Given the influence of the HCV-1-subtype in the anti-HCV therapy response, an alternative classification method is warranted.

Allelic variation among Helicobacter pylori vacA occurs in the signal and middle region of the gene. The aim of the study was to investigate alleleic variation of vacA among H. pylori strains from three regional areas of China and the relationship between vacA alleles and PUD. DNA extracted from 88 clinical isolates of H. pylori was analyzed by type-specific PCR and reverse hybridization line p...

Background.  Globally, case detection and treatment access are poor for rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis (RR-TB). The Xpert MTB/RIF test has the potential to increase detection and reduce time to treatment (TTT). However, these benefits are dependent on health system capacity to provide treatment. Methods.  We retrospectively assessed the impact of Xpert on treatment initiation and TTT in the ...

Genotypes A and D of the hepatitis B virus were found to be prevalent among 278 chronic carriers residing in Spain, and genotypes B, C, E and F were detected with significant frequency (9%). Two genotype E infections corresponded to carriers born in Spain who had never traveled to Africa. These results indicate that genotype E is beginning to circulate in the Spanish population in the same way ...
