The potency of a polyvalent antimeningococcus serum, as tested by its agglutination titer, was sacrificed by immunization with a large number of strains of the meningococcus. By immunization with a limited number of representative strains, four or six, carefully selected on account of their antigenic and agglutination properties, the potency was increased three- to tenfold without sacrificing t...

Latex agglutination was compared with fluorescent-antibody staining with group A conjugate and Lancefield precipitation for grouping of beta-hemolytic streptococci. Latex agglutination correctly grouped 98.8% of 82 group A streptococci and more than 95% of 187 group B, C, or G streptococci. Occasional cross-reactions occurred between groups A and C and groups B and G.

One hundred strains of Escherichia coli were tested for the production of the heat-labile enterotoxin by the Y1 adrenal cell test and a commercially available reversed passive latex agglutination test. The strains were grown in Casamino Acids-yeast extract broth, and filtered culture supernatants were tested for the presence of heat-labile enterotoxin. There was perfect correlation between the ...

The performance of a direct agglutination test for the detection of toxoplasma specific IgG immunoglobulin was compared with that ofthe latex agglutination test. The direct agglutination test was less sensitive but more specific than the latex agglutination test. Quantitative results were not directly comparable, reflecting the different antibody profiles detected in each assay. The direct aggl...

BACKGROUND Leptospirosis is often treated based on clinical diagnosis. There is a need for rapid laboratory diagnosis for this condition. The aim of this study was to compare the diagnostic accuracy of two rapid IgM based immunodiagnostic assays with the microscopic agglutination test (MAT), in acute leptospirosis infection. METHODS MAT, IgM based immunochromatographic test (Leptocheck-WB) an...

The authors evaluated a simple latex agglutination test for the serodiagnosis of acute human leptospirosis. A total of 380 serum samples from 85 confirmed leptospirosis patients and 202 non-leptospirosis patients were selected Using the selected cut-off value of weakly positive, the overall sensitivity and overall specificity of the test were 94.1% and 97.0% respectively. The weighted kappa val...

Rotavirus strains circulating in Sousse, Tunisia, between 1995 and 1999 were characterized antigenically by monoclonal antibodies to the VP6 subgroup and the VP7 serotype. The VP4 genotype was determined by reverse transcription-PCR, as were the strains with untyped VP7. Only 17% of 375 children were shedding rotavirus as determined by latex agglutination assay. Most rotavirus strains were G1P[...

There is a need for additional data on the distribution of pneumococcal serotypes in developing countries. We report the use of a coagglutination (COA) and a latex agglutination (LA) test for serotyping Streptococcus pneumoniae which were evaluated using 114 clinical isolates in Vellore, India. In tests to serotype 30 fresh isolates of pneumococci from meningitis (8 isolates), bacteraemia/septi...

The Virogen CMV Antibody Test is a simple and rapid latex agglutination assay for the detection of cytomegalovirus antibody in human serum and plasma. Evaluation of this assay with respect to enzyme immunoassay yielded a sensitivity of 98% with a specificity of 100%. In comparison to CMVScan, the Virogen CMV Antibody Test had a sensitivity of 98.4% and a specificity of 100%.
