Flexible Labor Supply Models Discrete-choice models of labor supply have become very popular for ex ante evaluations of policy reforms as they easily account for non-convex budget sets. We test the constraints imposed in practice on these models and suggest a fully flexible model that significantly improves fit. JEL Classification: H31, J22
The Hubris Hypothesis is grounded on a failure to adequately account for the winner’s curse, which leads to overbidding. Surprisingly few papers have attempted to develop a direct empirical test of the presence of overbidding in M&A contests. We develop two such tests in this paper. Our results strongly support the existence of overbidding. JEL classification: G34
We review an asymmetric auction experiment. Based on Plum (1992) private valuations of the two bidders are independently drawn from distinct but commonly known distributions, one of which first-order stochastically dominates the other. We test the qualitative properties of that model of asymmetric auctions, in particular whether the weak bidder behaves more aggressively than the strong, and the...
Using quarterly data for the last four decades, we test a number of traditional assumptions about aggregate consumer behaviour in the UK, with regard to the order of integration of the time series, the income elasticity of consumption and the stability of the parameters of the consumption function. In all cases, modification of these assumptions now appears to be necessary. JEL Classification: E21
We conduct an incentivized experiment to test whether the willingness to pay is higher for debit cards compared to cash for three consumer products. Our findings support this conjecture also after controlling for cash availability, spending type, price familiarity and consumption habits of the products. The evidence thus suggests that different representations of money matters for consumer beha...
This paper applies the Ijiri-Simon test for systematic deviations from Gibrat’s Law to citation numbers of economists. It is found that often-cited researchers attract a new citation numbers that are disproportionate to the quality of their work. It is also found that this Matthew Effect is stronger for economists who started their academic career earlier. JEL Classification: A14
Linear altruism predicts the estimated preferences to be independent of the subject’s position in the game, if the role allocation is randomly determined, because subjects, in each role, have the same preferences ex ante. We test and reject this hypothesis. JEL Classification: C51, C92, C72, D03
In this note we consider the treatment of structural breaks in VAR models used to test for unit roots and cointegration. We give practical guidelines for the inclusion and the specification of intervention dummies in those models. JEL Classification Code: C32, C52, E43.
This paper presents a new diagnosis method of induction motor faults based on time–frequency classification of the current waveforms. This method is based on a representation space, a selection criterion, and a decision criterion. In order to define the representation space, an optimized time–frequency representation (TFR) is designed from the time–frequency ambiguity plane. The selection crite...
