In contrast to adult rheumatoid arthritis (RA) little is known about the prevalence, nature and cause of lung function abnormalities in children with juvenile chronic arthritis (JCA). The aim of this study was to determine whether children with polyarticular and systemic onset JCA have lung function abnormalities and if so, whether they are related to pulmonary disease, thoracic and/or muscular...
OBJECTIVE Phenotype II in familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is the onset of amyloidosis before the onset of FMF with its typical attacks, or as an isolated finding in a member of an FMF family. Its presence was investigated by looking for proteinuria among the asymptomatic relatives of patients with FMF complicated by amyloidosis and among the asymptomatic relatives of patients with juvenile c...
The prevalence of anticardiolipin antibodies was evaluated in 70 children with juvenile chronic arthritis (JCA), in 25 adult patients with rheumatoid arthritis, in 42 healthy children and in 40 adult controls. Thirty seven (53%) patients with JCA were positive for IgG or IgM anticardiolipin antibodies, or both, and 30 (43%) for IgG anticardiolipin antibodies. In contrast, only seven (28%) adult...
Three new species of Macrelmis Motschulsky, 1859 (Macrelmis bispo sp. nov., Macrelmis froehlichi sp. nov., and Macrelmis nessimiani sp. nov.) are herein described and illustrated. The species were collected from several streams in Goiás State, Brazil, a formerly unknown region concerning Elmidae fauna. We also provide an updated key for the Macrelmis species of Brazil.
IgG subclass levels of sera from 26 patients with juvenile chronic arthritis (JCA) were determined by means of mouse monoclonal antibodies. Patients were divided into three groups according to clinical activity of the disease: active disease, partial remission, and remission. One hundred and sixty four age matched, healthy children served as controls. IgG subclass concentrations were log transf...

Three hundred and fifteen patients with anterior uveitis associated with juvenile chronic arthritis (JCA) were studied in order to identify the various risk factors for uveitis. Girls were more susceptible to uveitis than boys by a ratio of 3:1. In 94% of cases the uveitis was diagnosed after the development of arthritis. The risk of uveitis was small after seven or more years had elapsed from ...
OBJECTIVE In adults, autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) has been described recently as a possible treatment for severe autoimmune disease refractory to conventional treatment. We report here the four first children with severe forms of juvenile chronic arthritis (JCA) treated with ASCT. METHODS We studied three children with systemic JCA and one child with polyarticular JCA. Unprimed...
Occurrence of antiperinuclear, antikeratin, and anti-RA 33 antibodies in juvenile chronic arthritis.
OBJECTIVES Antiperinuclear factor (APF), antikeratin antibodies (AKA), and anti-RA 33 antibodies are currently considered to be good markers for the diagnosis of adult rheumatoid arthritis with or without rheumatoid factor (RF). The prevalence of these markers was retrospectively reviewed in children with juvenile chronic arthritis (JCA) to determine whether they were associated with specific f...
