background: calprotectin is cytotoxic agent that its anti-tumor effects are governed through suppression of topoisomerase ii a key enzyme in apoptosis. in previous studies, cytotoxicity and apoptotic effects of calprotectin are shown on different cancer cell lines, but not human gastric cancer cell lines. in the present study, cytotoxicity and apoptotic effects of calprotectin on human gastric ...

Polyethylene glycol (PEG 8000) is a potent cancer chemopreventive agent. This osmotic laxative polymer markedly suppresses colon cancer in rats. To explain the mechanism, we have tested the in vitro effect of PEG on four human cell lines. Two poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma lines (HT29 and COLO205), a fetal mucosa line (FHC) and a differentiated line (post-confluent Caco-2) were incubated ...

PURPOSE Voltage-gated Kv potassium channels, like ether a go-go (EAG) channels, have been recognized for their oncogenic potential in breast cancer and other malignant tumors. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN We examined the molecular and functional expression of Kv channels in human colonic cancers and colon of mice treated with the chemical carcinogens dimethylhydrazine and N-methyl-N-nitrosourea. The d...

BACKGROUND Large colonic polyps are associated with advanced dysplasia, but prevalence and characteristics of synchronous polyps in patients with large flat colonic polyps are poorly investigated. This study aims to characterize clinicopathological features of large flat colonic polyps and their impact on occurrence and characteristics of synchronous polyps. METHODS A total of 802 patients th...

Human colonic tissue is exposed to a variety of toxic chemicals and potential carcinogens in the diet and the intestinal microenvironment. Colonic adenocarcinoma is commonly resistant to the cytotoxic effects of most chemotherapeutic drugs. We have examined drug metabolic and detoxification pathways in clinical specimens of colon carcinoma and normal adjacent mucosa from 17 patients. All elemen...

Paraneoplastic neurologic disorders are extremely rare in cancer patients and are most commonly associated with certain tumors, such as ovarian cancer, small cell lung cancer, and breast cancer. We report here a paraneoplastic neurological syndrome in a 53-year-old man with colonic adenocarcinoma with a solitary liver metastasis. His paraneoplastic syndrome was successfully treated by methylpre...

We report an unusual case of a giant colonic mucocele following ileo-sigmoid bypass surgery in a patient with advanced adenocarcinoma of the splenic flexure. The formation of a giant colonic mucocele resulted from distal splenic flexure obstruction due to tumour relapse and proximal caecal obstruction due to peritoneal disease with subsequent accumulation of mucus in the closed loop.
