The biorthogonality condition for Stokes flow in annular trenches bounded by horizontal parallel planes and concentric vertical cylinders is derived. This condition, is needed to compute the coefficients of the eigenfunction expansion solution of the corresponding Stokes flow problem.
The primary goal during FY01/02 was to quantitatively assess zooplankton distributions and species in Knight Inlet, with special focus on the sill near Hoeya Head. This area has been the subject of considerable ONR-sponsored oceanographic research in the past focused on the stratified flow features induced by the sill (e.g. Farmer and Armi 1999; Klymak and Gregg 2001). Echo-sounder surveys perf...
Many animals move using lateral undulations, but snakes are noteworthy for using this type of locomotion in an unusual diversity of environments, including trees in which both the spacing and orientation of branches vary considerably. Despite branches providing discrete locations for snakes to generate propulsive forces during lateral undulation, the consequences of branch spacing for the locom...
Sandstone intrusions are found in all sedimentary environments but have been reported most commonly from deep-water settings. They also appear to be more frequently developed in tectonically active settings where applied tectonic stresses facilitate development of high fluid pressures within the sediments. A variety of mechanisms have been cited as triggers for clastic intrusions. These include...
We report hydrogen storage at an ordinary pressure due to a bottle-neck effect of an ultramicroporous crystal. Stored hydrogen was kept at an ordinary pressure below -110 °C. The amounts of stored hydrogen gas linearly correlated with the initial pressures. These phenomena suggested the ultramicroporous tunnels worked as a molecular gas cylinder.
This study investigates the hydro-elastic behaviors of fully submerged horizontal cylinders in different regular waves. Two methods were proposed and compared this study. The first method was based on potential theory frequency domain discrete-module-beam (DMB) method, which discretizes a floating elastic structure into sufficient number rigid bodies while simultaneously representing behavior f...
Numerous geological observations evidence that inelastic deformation occurs during sills and laccoliths emplacement. However, most models of sill and laccolith emplacement neglect inelastic processes by assuming purely elastic deformation of the host rock. This assumption has never been tested so that the role of inelastic deformation on the growth dynamics of magma intrusions remains poorly un...
