Magnesium, titanium and zirconium and their alloys are extensively used in industrial and military applications where they would be subjected to extreme environments of high stress and strain-rate loading. Their hexagonal close-packed (HCP) crystal lattice structures present interesting challenges for optimizing their mechanical response under such loading conditions. In this paper, we review h...

From a deep eutectic mixture consisting of trimethylammonium chloride (TMACl) and oxalic acid, two templated zirconium phosphates, ZrPOF-TMA1 with 8- and 10-ring pore channels as well as ZrPOF-TMA2 with 7- and 8-ring pore channels, have been synthesized. A low P/Zr ratio is necessary for ZrPOF-TMA1, and higher P/Zr ratios tend to form ZrPOF-TMA2, but the former cannot be obtained by templating ...

Surface functionalisation with organic modifiers of multi-layered zirconium phosphate (ZrP) nanoparticles used as polymer fillers can be directly probed by dynamic nuclear polarisation NMR, which provides unambiguous evidence of the presence of P-O-C chemical bonds at the surface of the ZrP layers, thereby confirming successful functionalisation.

Thin nanosheets from a layered zirconium phosphate-carboxyphosphonate is reported here. Small Pd nanoparticles have been supported on these nanosheets by an efficient method. The resulting Pd-catalyst was fully characterized and tested in the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling. The catalytic system proved its efficiency as it was reused for several cycles and showed low Pd leaching.

Exfoliation of layered inorganic nanomaterials into single-layered sheets has been widely interested in materials chemistry and composite fabrication. Here, we report the exfoliation of layered zirconium phosphate nanoplatelets by using small molecule intercalating agents in ionic liquids, which opens a new platform for fabricating single-layered inorganic materials from synthetic layered compo...

Efficient pretreatment is the key step in catalytic biomass conversion. Herein, a mixed ball-milling method was used to pretreat cellulose with a solid catalyst. The method was tested with solid acid and commercial 5 wt% Ru/C in water, and the effect of pretreatment on yield was measured by the hydrolytic-hydrogenation of cellulose to sugar alcohols, which are the platform compounds for the pro...

Effective tribofilms are desirable to protect mechanical systems. In the present research, we investigated the formation of a tribofilm through the use of α-ZrP (Zr(HPO4)2 ̈H2O) as an additive. Experiments were conducted on a base oil where 0.2 wt% of the additive was used. Experimental results showed a 50% reduction in friction and a 30% reduction in wear when compared to the base oil containin...

The gel-to-fluid and lamellar-to-HII-hexagonal thermotropic phase transitions of egg-yolk phosphatidylethanolamine have been examined by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy under a variety of conditions, namely excess water at pH 5.0, excess water at pH 9.5 and low hydration. The various lamellar and hexagonal phases have been characterized by X-ray diffraction. At pH 5.0, gel-fluid and lam...
