three known feline hemoplasmas are mycoplsama haemofelis, ‘candidatus mycoplasma haemominutum’ and ‘candidatus mycoplasma turicensis’. they are described as cause of feline infectious anemia in domestic and wild felids. other blood parasites or blood-related pathogens like concurrent retroviral infections may deteriorate the clinical condition and severity of anemia. the aims of this study were...
AIM This study is part of an active surveillance program for monitoring animal health status in endangered species, and was conducted to screen captive Barbary sheep (Ammotragus lervia) for hemoplasma infection. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 12 blood samples were collected, DNA extracted and further tested by a pan-hemoplasma polymerase chain reaction protocol. RESULTS Animals were clini...
Two variants of an organism resembling the ovine hemoplasma, Mycoplasma ovis, were detected by PCR in blood samples from a veterinarian in Texas. Coinfection with similar variants has been described in sheep. This represents the first report of human infection with this organism. The veterinarian was coinfected with Bartonella henselae.
BACKGROUND Hemotropic mycoplasmas (hemoplasmas), bacteria belonging to the class Mollicutes, are obligatory red blood cell pathogens of a variety of animal species. They may cause acute anemia that is life-threatening or chronic disease that is clinically silent, but may interfere with results of experimental studies when using infected animals. Since these bacteria cannot be cultivated, molecu...

a 2-year-old male pekingese dog was referred to shiraz university’s veterinary teaching hospital for anorexia and depression. the case had no history of surgery. physical examination revealed no abnormalities except mild depression and fever. small, coccoid, epicellular bacteria were detected on erythrocytes by microscopic examination of the giemsa-stained blood smears. abnormalities noted in t...
Equine haemotropic mycoplasmosis (EHM) is a condition rarely reported worldwide. A horse presented with unspecific clinical findings and non-response to treatment the common endemic haemoparasitic bacterial infections, warranted thorough molecular investigation of suspected infection given fluctuating parasitaemia low sensitivity specificity Light Microscopy (LM) detection infections. Blood col...

Hemotrophic mycoplasmas infect a variety of mammals. Although infection in humans is rarely reported, an association with an immunocompromised state has been suggested. We report a case of a Mycoplasma haemofelis-like infection in an HIV-positive patient co-infected with Bartonella henselae.
