in a clinical trial a new pyrrolidonyl-β-naphthylamide (pyr) hydrolysis test was compared with the bacitracin disk susceptibility test for accuracy in the presumptive identification of group a streptococci (gas). among 128 isolates of beta-hemolytic streptococci 93 group a isolates were found. the sensitivity of the pyr and bacitracin tests were similar (98.9%), but the bacitracin test had a lo...
A method is described for the preparation from hemolytic streptococci of extracts containing a soluble precipitating substance. By the use of such extracts, it is shown that nearly all members of this family yield a common precipitable substance. So far, therefore, as concerns the precipitin reaction, the hemolytic streptococci form a practically homogeneous group.
1. Confirming the observations of other experimenters, it has been found that group A hemolytic streptococci produce a capsule containing a polysaccharide which is similar to, if not identical with, certain high molecular weight sugars found in the mammalian body. 2. Leech extract possesses a powerful enzyme capable of splitting one of the linkages in this polysaccharide and of decapsulating gr...
Impetigo is a common cutaneous infection that is especially prevalent in children. Historically, impetigo is caused by either group A β-hemolytic streptococci or Staphylococcus aureus. Currently, the most frequently isolated pathogen is S. aureus. This article discusses the microbiologic and virulence factors of group A β-hemolytic streptococci and Staphylococcus aureus, clinical characteristic...
Group B beta-hemolytic streptococci were isolated from the throats of 49 of 1,110 patients who had pharyngitis. Compared with patients whose throat cultures were negative for beta-hemolytic streptococci, those harboring group B were more likely to have enlarged tonsils (P less than 0.001), exudate (P less than 0.02), and tender enlarged anterior cervical lymph nodes (P less than 0.01). Group B ...
Twenty-nine lots of Bacti-Lab streptococci culture plates containing nalidixic acid, neomycin, and amphotericin B were inoculated with 25 strains of group A, B, C, F, and G strepotocci, 13 strains of nonstrepotcoccal organisms representative of the throat flora, and 198 fresh clinical thorat specimens to determine the accuracy of the plates in identifying group A streptococci. With the Bacti-La...

1. The majority of strains of hemolytic streptococci from puerperal infections of the uterus were identified serologically as members of the Group A described by Lancefield. 2. The majority of strains isolated from the birth canal of women whose puerperium was afebrile were not members of Group A. 3. The existence of two new serological groups of hemolytic streptococci, Groups F and G, is descr...
Received: 20/08/2011 Sent for Revision: 21/11/2011 Received Revised Manuscript: 14/07/2012 Accepted: 04/08/2012 background and Objective: Group A Beta hemolytic streptococci (GABHS) is the most common bacterial cases of acute pharyngitis in school children. Diagnosis of the etiological agent and appropriate anibiotic therapy is important. The aim of this study was to determine the antibio...
