An experimental study about the anisotropic wetting behavior of a surface patterned with parallel grooves is presented as an application example of a novel technique for investigation of complete and partial anisotropic wetting on structured surface by X-ray microtomography. Shape of glycerin droplets on such surface is investigated by X-ray micro computed tomography (microCT) acting as a non-i...

Sediment resuspension plays an important role in the transport and fate of heavy metals in the aquatic environment. In the present study, the release and binding forms of Cr, Cu, Zn, Pb under hydrodynamic conditions were investigated using an annular flume. Two sediments located at YLZ and GBD from Liangshui River, Beijing were resuspended for 10 hr at 0.159 and 0.267 m/sec, respectively. The c...

Using two-photon luminescence (TPL) microscopy and local reflection spectroscopy we investigate electromagnetic field enhancement effects from a µm-sized composition of 450-nm-deep V-grooves milled by focused ion beam in a thick gold film and assembled to feature, within the same structure, individual V-grooves as well as one- and two-dimensional 300-nm-period arrays of, respectively, parallel ...

OBJECTIVES The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of macroscopic grooves on bone formation in vivo and differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) in vitro. MATERIALS AND METHODS The effects of macroscopic grooves on titanium alloy implants and disks were tested in rabbit tibiae and cultured hMSCs. The bone-to-implant contact (BIC) and bone area were evaluated in rabbi...

Fine grooves machined into the surface panels of an antenna help to scatter solar radiation. In an earlier memo it was concluded that a circular profile for the grooves was superior to a triangular. After correcting some errors in that note the triangular grooves appear to be more effective. The corrected formulation and some additional comments are presented here.

To simulate food contact surfaces with pits or cracks, stainless steel plates with grooves (depths between 0.2 and 5 mm) were constructed. These plates were artificially contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes in clean conditions, with organic soiling, or after 14 days of biofilm formation after which inactivation of the pathogen by Suma Tab D4 (sodium dichloroisocyanurate, 240 and 300 mg/lite...

The spreading of liquid drops on surfaces corrugated with micrometer-scale parallel grooves is studied both experimentally and numerically. Because of the surface patterning, the typical final drop shape is no longer spherical. The elongation direction can be either parallel or perpendicular to the direction of the grooves, depending on the initial drop conditions. We interpret this result as a...

The four asteroids visited by spacecraft, Gaspra, Ida, Mathilde, and Eros, have shapes and surface morphologies dominated by the effects of impact cratering. The presence of impactderived regolith has been inferred on S-class asteroids Gaspra, Ida, and Eros from photometry, morphological features, and subtle color variations related to optical maturation of surface materials. Grooves and ridges...

The aim of this study was to find any structural differences between the digital pads of forelimbs and hind limbs as well as more careful investigation of the internal and external structures of the toe-pad. In this study, pad morphology and cytology in Litoria caerulea is described using SEM, TEM and light microscopy. At the gross anatomical level, toe-pads in hind limbs were subdivided into m...

We present a method for direct three-dimensional (3D) patterning of porous nanomaterials through the application of a premastered and reusable gray-scale stamp. Four classes of 3D nanostructures are demonstrated for the first time in porous media: gradient profiles, digital patterns, curves and lens shapes, and sharp features including v-grooves, nano-pits, and 'cookie-cutter' particles. Furthe...
