The objective of this study was to assess the effects of food deprivation and exogenous cortisol administration on somatic growth of channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, and examine the resultant changes in circulating insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) concentrations and growth hormone receptor (GHR) gene expression. Integral to this objective, we report the isolation, sequence, and charact...
We have obtained HST WFPC2 observations of three very luminous but morphologically different giant H II regions (GHRs) in M101, NGC5461, NGC5462 and NGC5471, in order to study cluster formation in GHRs. Images obtained in the F547M and F675W bands are used to identify cluster candidates and for photometric measurements, and images in the F656N band are used to show ionized interstellar gas. The...
We have observed the much studied Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC5548 with the GHRS spectrometer on HST. Our 14ksec observation covers the CIV emission line at a resolution of >20,000. Our purpose was to study the absorption line found at lower resolution by IUE and HST/FOS. We found that the CIV absorption line resolves into 6 separate doublets with EWs of 0.07Å–0.38Å. The absorption lines have blueshift...
Excellent HST/GHRS spectra of interstellar hydrogen and deuterium Lyman-absorption toward nearby stars allow us to identify systematic errors that have plagued earlier work and to measure accurate values of the D/H ratio in local interstellar gas. Analysis of 12 sightlines through the Local Interstellar Cloud leads to a mean value of D/H = (1:50 0:10) 10 ?5 with all data points lying within 1 o...
This review highlights current (and future!) hot topics in astrophysics where atomic or molecular input data are (or will be) essential, with special emphasis on topics relating to nucleosynthesis and cosmochemistry. We first discuss issues (like the abundances of oxygen and iron in the Sun, and that of lithium in post-AGB stars) where the use of poor-quality atomic or molecular data have led t...
Using observations of the 2496.7 Å B i line with the HST GHRS at a nominal resolution of 90,000, we have found the abundance of boron of HD140283 to be log ǫB(= 12 + log(NB/NH)) = 0.34 ± 0.20. This result is found when a significant non-LTE effect in the formation of the B i line is taken into account. The resulting NB/NBe ratio is about 17 (in the range 9 – 34), which is in very good agreement...
