Knowledge discovery in scientific and research datasets is an extremely challenging problem due to the high dimensionality, heterogeneity, and complex relationships within the data. When these datasets also includes temporal and geospatial components, the challenges in analyzing the data become even more difficult. A number of visualization approaches have been developed and studied to support ...

This study proposed different techniques to estimate the isotope composition (?18O), salinity and temperature/potential temperature in Mediterranean Sea using five variables: (i–ii) geographic coordinates (Longitude, Latitude), (iii) year, (iv) month (v) depth. Three kinds of models based on artificial neural network (ANN), random forest (RF) support vector machine (SVM) were developed. Accordi...

We used geographic information systems to characterize the dynamic change in spatial distribution of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in Beijing, People's Republic of China. The seasonal variation in its incidence was observed by creating an epidemic curve. HFRS was associated with developed land, orchards, and rice paddies.

An intensi®cation of auroral luminosity referred to as an auroral break-up often accompanies the onset of geomagnetic pulsation (Pi 2) at the dip-equator. One such auroral break-up occurred at 2239 UT on 16 June, 1986, being accompanied by weak substorm activity (AE 50 nT) which was recorded in all-sky image of Syowa Station, Antarctica (66.2°S, 71.8°E in geomagnetic coordinates). The associate...

Location-based services have attracted the attention of important research in the field of mobile computing. Specifically, different mechanisms have been proposed to process location-dependent queries. In the above mentioned context, it is usually assumed that the location data are expressed at a fine geographic precision. However, a different granularity may be more appropriate in certain situ...

We investigate automatic geolocation (i.e. identification of the location, expressed as latitude/longitude coordinates) of documents. Geolocation can be an effective means of summarizing large document collections and it is an important component of geographic information retrieval. We describe several simple supervised methods for document geolocation using only the document’s raw text as evid...

Geotagging is the process of associating with textual data items the geographic position they denote, usually in the form of geographical coordinates (latitude and longitude). Automatic geotagging is often trivial relying on one of the many available gazetteers, such as OpenStreetMap (OSM). However, such knowledge bases are not free of errors, and, while this simple match works for popular loca...
