In this paper we study the effect of hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) vapor on an SnO2-based gas sensor (GGS 1330, UST Umweltsensortechnik GmbH, Geschwenda, Germany) in a temperature cycled operation (TCO). We show that HMDSO poisoning can be quantified at early stages (85 to 340 ppm×min) with a resolution of ±85 ppm×min using TCO. This novel approach for sensor self-monitoring provides a simple me...
Carbon monoxide is a nonirritant, odorless, colorless gas. Its effects are prominent in organs most sensitive to oxygen deprivation, such as the heart, brain, and kidney. Although less frequently, an association between thromboembolic events and carbon monoxide poisoning has been shown in the literatures. In this case, we report a case of atrial thrombus associated with carbon monoxide poisoning.
Most of hydrogen sulfide poisoning has been reported as industrial accidents in Japan. However, since January 2008, a burgeoning of suicide attempts using homemade hydrogen sulfide gas has become evident. By April 2008, the fad escalated into a chain reaction nationwide. Mortality of the poisoning was very high. There were 220 cases of attempted gas suicides during the period of March 27 to Jun...
A detailed investigation of trends in suicide rates in Scotland from 1974 to 1984 showed a complex pattern. Overall rates for men increased by 40% with the greatest increases in those aged 45-64. In contrast, rates for women showed a small decline, which was most noticeable in those aged 15-24. The well recognised decline in poisoning by domestic gas was seen over this period, and suicide by th...
Phosgene (COCl2) is a colorless oxidant gas which is heavier than air and the lethal exposure dose (LC50) in humans is 500 ppm/min. This gas was originally manufactured as an agent for chemical warfare during World War I and there had been a great deal of studies on phosgene poisoning during the early years of industrial use. It is still widely used in the synthesis of chemicals and plastics. I...
At the start of the 20th century, CO poisoning was treated by administering a combination of CO(2) and O(2) (carbogen) to stimulate ventilation. This treatment was reported to be highly effective, even reversing the deep coma of severe CO poisoning before patients arrived at the hospital. The efficacy of carbogen in treating CO poisoning was initially attributed to the absorption of CO(2); howe...
OBJECTIVES CO poisoning has been a serious industrial hazard in Japanese workplaces. Although incomplete combustion is the major cause of CO generation, there is a risk of CO poisoning during some welding operations. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the generation rate of CO from CO2 arc welding under controlled laboratory conditions and estimate the ventilation requirements for the...
Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas produced as a by-product of incomplete combustion. Carbon monoxide poisoning accounts for approximately 3500 deaths in the United States annually. Carbon monoxide in exhaust fumes from motor vehicles accounts for most deaths due to carbon monoxide poisoning; however, poorly functioning heating systems, inhaled smoke, and propane-operated forklifts al...
