By analyzing related issues in psychology and linguistics, two basic types of fuzziness can be attributed to similarity and relativity, respectively. In both cases, it is possible to interpret grade of membership as the proportion of positive evidence, so as to treat fuzziness and randomness uniformly.

Results from a set o f questionnaires designed to compare methods of obtaining membership functions were analyzed to identify general trends in fuzziness. It was found that fuzziness in comprehension is ahvays reflected in the answer; concepts such as difficulty, imprecision, and shape of membership functions are clearly interrelated; and the transition between crisp extremes through fuzziness ...

The fuzziness-based uncertainty of GIS products is studied from objective and subjective aspects respectively in this paper. From the point of view of objective aspect, the fuzziness-based uncertainty of GIS products consists of items concerning the data sources of GIS products. From the point of view of subjective aspect, the fuzziness-based uncertainty of GIS products includes human’s apprais...

This paper presents an automated fuzziness-driven algorithm for image enhancement. A class of parametric indices of fuzziness is introduced, which serves as the optimization criterion of the contrast-enhancement procedure. We show that the parametric class of indices constitutes a one-parameter generalization of the linear index of fuzziness of a set. The modification of the membership values o...

Fuzziness (entropy) is a commonly used measure of uncertainty for type-1 fuzzy sets. For interval type-2 fuzzy sets (IT2 FSs), centroid, cardinality, fuzziness, variance and skewness are all measures of uncertainties. The centroid of an IT2 FS has been defined by Karnik and Mendel. In this paper, the other four concepts are defined. All definitions use a Representation Theorem for IT2 FSs. Form...

Different models for computing the spatial relations have been developed in the last decade. Separate methods are used for computing topological, directional and distance relations. These models have also been extended in fuzzy domains based on fuzzy or vague objects and less attention has been paid to fuzzy relations. In this paper 8 fuzzy topological relations are computed with the help of 1D...

In this paper we discuss on the relationship between fuzziness and its measuring on the one side, and the possible uses of fuzzy sets on the other side. We conclude that the usual axioms and measures of fuzziness disregard the commensurability assumption and view the fuzzy set as a collection of fuzzy singletons. We propose new axioms and a relation “less fuzzy than” for a conjunctive view of f...

Algorithms based on minimization of compactness and of fuzziness are developed whereby it is possible to obtain both fuzzy and nonfuzzy (thresholded) versions of an ill-defined image. The incorporation of fuzziness in the spatial domain, i.e., in describing the geometry of regions, makes it possible to provide more meaningful results than by considering fuzziness in grey level alone. The effect...
