Small seine net fish assemblages in the headwater region of the Kariega Estuary are described and compared to the catch composition in other parts of the system. The geographical headwaters of the freshwater ‘deprived’ Kariega Estuary were utilised by a range of fish species but, in contrast to the nearby freshwater ‘rich’ Great Fish Estuary, few important angling species (e.g. spotted grunter ...

In order to study the role of the kidney in fish osmoregulation, freshwater acclimatized juvenile spottedscat (Scatophagus argus L.) were subjected to four different salinities and observed for histomorphometricchanges of the kidney at 1, 2, 10 and 15 days post transfer time points. The overall morphological changesdisplayed by fish kidney included significant decrease in the density of collect...

Diadromy affords fish access to productive ecosystems, increasing growth and ultimately fitness, but it is unclear whether these advantages persist for species migrating within highly altered habitat. Here, we compared the foraging success of wild Delta Smelt-an endangered, zooplanktivorous, annual, semi-anadromous fish that is endemic to the highly altered San Francisco Estuary (SFE)-collected...

Fisheries ABSTRACT: Anthropogenic effects including river regulation, watershed development, contamination, and fish introductions have substantially affected the majority of freshwater habitats in Europe and North America. This pattern of resource development and degradation is widespread in the tropics, and often little is known about the resources before they are lost. This article describes...

The salmon farming production chain is structured in four consecutive phases: freshwater, seawater, plant processing, and distribution and marketing. The phases interact in a pull manner, freshwater stocks fish to meet seawater’s demand, seawater produces to meet plant processing biomass demand, and the processing plant produces to satisfy consumers’ demand. Freshwater planning decisions are in...

Methylmercury (MeHg) exposure can cause adverse reproductive and neurodevelopmental health effects. Estuarine fish may be exposed to MeHg produced in rivers and their watersheds, benthic sediment, and the marine water column, but the relative importance of each source is poorly understood. We measured stable isotopes of mercury (δ202Hg, Δ199Hg, and Δ201Hg), carbon (δ13C), and nitrogen (δ15N) in...

Haff disease associated rhabdomyolysis is correlated with the ingestion of certain freshwater fish and shellfish and is caused by an unidentified toxin. We report the case of a patient who experienced rhabdomyolysis approximately 2 hours after ingestion of the freshwater fish Mylossoma duriventre (pacu-manteiga) approximately 3 years after an outbreak had been reported in Manaus, Brazilian Amazon.

There is still limited information on the distribution of Cryptosporidium species and genotypes in fish. The present study investigated the prevalence of Cryptosporidium species in cultured freshwater (n=132), wild freshwater (n=206) and wild marine (n=276) fish in Papua New Guinea (PNG) by PCR screening at the 18S rRNA locus. A total of seven fish (2 cultured freshwater, 1 wild freshwater and ...
