Statistical Language Understanding Using Frame Semantics
We summarize our experience using FrameNet in two rather different projects in natural language processing (NLP). We conclude that NLP can benefit from FrameNet in different ways, but we sketch some problems that need to be overcome.
Frame semantics is a linguistic theory which is currently gaining ground. The creation of lexical entries for a large number of words presupposes the development of complex lexical acquisition techniques in order to identify the vocabulary for describing the elements of a 'frame'. In this paper, we show how a lexical-semantic database compiled on the basis of a bilingual (English-French) dictio...
Emotions play a significant role in identifying attitude, state, condition or mode of a particular circumstance. Textual data, in particular, involves emotional state and affective communication beside its informative contents. Emotion extraction from text has been potentially studied to stimulate and elicit articulation features. In this study, a machine learning emotion detection model is pro...
Frame logic is well known as a useful ontology modeling formalism, mainly appreciated for its object-oriented features and its nonmonotonic variant, capable to deal with typical nonmonotonic features such as object oriented inheritance. This paper presents a preliminary work defining a framework for coping with frame-like syntax and higher order reasoning within an answer set programming enviro...
The Problem Frame approach (PF) is an effective requirements engineering tool for analysing and structuring software development problems. PF has a graphical notation that is easy to use and understand. PF imposes only loose constraints on the features of the language used to describe its components and, with only slight restrictions, Hoare’s CSP can be used. Although not generally applicable, ...
We report on preliminary methodological issues related to the development of a Greek lexical resource based on the theory of frame semantics and supported by corpus evidence. Although our approach is primarily lexicographic, we also address a treebank annotation goal. We are aiming to produce an initial network of Greek words and frame-semantic descriptions that will reliably contribute to the ...
We continue the investigations begun in [10]. We shall define a semantics that is build on a new notion of frame, called coherence frames. In these frames, objects are transcendental (world–independent), as in the standard constant–domain semantics. This will remove the asymmetry between constants and variables of the counterpart semantics of [10]. We demonstrate the completeness of (general) c...
In this paper, we propose a frame-based approach to polysemy by analyzing three near-synonymous verbs biaoshi (表示), biaoda (表達) and biaolu (表露). Based on Liu and Wu (2004), this paper further discusses the cross-frame phenomena of near-synonyms with a detailed comparison of their syntactic and collocational patterns. It is shown that polysemy among related verbs may be well defined and manifest...
In this paper we discuss motivations and strategies for generalising over instance-based frame assignment rules that we extract from frame-annotated corpora. Corpus-induced syntax-semantics mapping rules for frame assignment can be used for automatic semantic role labelling of unparsed text, but further, to extract linguistic knowledge for a lexical semantic resource with a general syntax-seman...
