[1] Vug waves are a joint deformation/fluid-migration mechanism in which a rock deforms by the movement of a penny-shaped, fluid-filled crack dislocation across a plane of shear, with migration of the crack and fluid driven by the release of elastic shear strain energy. Vug waves (here so named because a ‘‘vug’’ is a hole in the Earth and ‘‘wave’’ implies that it moves) may provide an effective...

Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt insertion may be associated with migration into the abdominal wall, gastrointestinal tract, bladder, vagina, scrotum, and mediastinum. Migration of the VP shunt into the scrotum has been rarely reported. We present a 1 year old boy with cerebrospinal fluid hydrocele due to the migration of a VP shunt catheter into the right side scrotum.

Smooth muscle cells (SMCs) are organized in various patterns in blood vessels. Whereas straight blood vessels mainly contain circumferentially aligned SMCs, curved blood vessels are composed of axially aligned SMCs in regions with vortex blood flow. The vortex flow-dependent feature of SMC alignment suggests a role for nonuniform fluid shear stress in regulating the pattern formation of SMCs. H...

Fetal swallowing of amniotic fluid, which contains numerous cytokines and growth factors, plays a key role in gut mucosal development. Preterm birth interrupts this exposure to amniotic fluid-borne growth factors, possibly contributing to the increased risk of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in premature infants. We hypothesized that supplementation of formula feeds with amniotic fluid can prov...

The induced flow effect is the rotary motion generated in the fluid flow due to the temperature gradient. The phenomenon of thermophoresis is the movement of particles from the warmer side of the fluid to the cooler side. Laser is a very suitable device for creating a temperature gradient due to its unique features such as high power density, harmonic waves, single wavelength and very low diver...

The chemotaxis and chemiluminescence responses of polymorphonuclear leucocytes (PMN) of synovial fluid and peripheral blood from patients with acute reactive arthritis were studied. Rates of chemotactic and chemokinetic migration of synovial fluid PMN were significantly decreased. In addition, chemiluminescence responses tended to be depressed, suggesting that the cells were deactivated for bot...

Accruing evidence indicates that the levels of extracellular Mg2+ and Ca2+ can have a distinct impact on the adhesive and migratory activities of many cell types. The physiological relevance of these observations, however, has remained largely unexplored. In the present study, wound fluids collected throughout the early stages of cutaneous wound repair were examined for possible Mg2+ and Ca2+ f...

Fluid-induced earthquake sequences generally appear as expanding swarms activating a particular fault. The recent analysis of swarm in the Corinth rift has revealed dual migration pattern, with global slow expansion (m day?1) and episodes rapid (km day?1). Such are interpreted fluid diffusion, which ignores possibility static, dynamic, or aseismic triggering existence migration. Here, we propos...
