The dynamic, three-dimensional shape of flapping insect wings may influence many aspects of flight performance. Insect wing deformations during flight are largely passive, and are controlled primarily by the architecture and material properties of the wing. Although many details of wing structure are well understood, the distribution of flexural stiffness in insect wings and its effects on wing...

The proof-of-concept demonstration of a microfiber-based flexural disc accelerometer is presented. The reduced microfiber size and bending radii give rise to high device compactness and responsivity. A flexural disc accelerometer manufactured from a 10 mm long microfiber showed a performance of ~2.2 rad/g, with the responsivity expected to increase proportionally with the microfiber length.

generally, fatigue failure in an element happens at the notch on a surface where the stress level rises because of the stress concentration effect. the present paper investigates the effect of a notch on the fatigue life of the hsla100 (high strength low alloy) steel which is widely applicable in the marine industry. tensile test was conducted on specimens and mechanical properties were obtain...

This study presents an analytical investigation into the mechanical behavior of a cartilage-polydioxanone (PDS) plate composite grafts. Numerical methods are used to provide a first-order, numerical model of the flexural stiffness of a cartilage-PDS graft. Flexural stiffness is a measure of resistance to bending and is inversely related to the amount of deformation a structure may experience wh...

Beam samples containing cranial sutures were prepared from embalmed and unembalmed cranial bone and were tested to determine their flexural stiffness and strength. With the aid of layered beam theory, the flexural stiffnesses of beams containing cranial sutures were compared to hypothetical layered cranial bone beams which did not contain sutures. The bending stiffnesses and strengths of crania...

This study developed a macro-sized polyamide (PA) fiber for concrete reinforcement and investigated the influence of the PA fiber on flexural responses in accordance with ASTM standards. PA fibers are advantageous compared to steel fibers that are corrosive and gravitated. The macro-sized PA fiber significantly improved concrete ductility and toughness. Unlike steel fibers, the PA fibers produc...

Cement concrete pavements are designed for flexural fatigue loading due to traffic. Due to its numerous advantages high performance cement concrete is finding it’s way in pavement construction. This paper investigates the fatigue strength of High Performance Cement Concretes subjected to flexural loading. Fatigue studies are conducted on these concretes to obtain the fatigue lives at various st...

Usually, fatigue tests on fibre-reinforced composites are performed in uni-axial tension/tension or tension/compression fatigue [1], providing the S-N data. Although bending fatigue tests are not widely accepted as a standard, they are used a lot for research purposes [2] and they do have some important advantages [3]. In case of three-point bending fatigue, the history of bending force versus ...

STUDY DESIGN Twelve Cadisc-L devices were subjected to flexion (0°-6°) and extension (0° to -3°) motions at compressive loads between 500 N and 2000 N at a flexural rate between 0.25°/s and 3.0°/s. OBJECTIVE To quantify the change in flexural properties of the Cadisc-L (elastomeric device), when subjected to increasing magnitudes of axial load and at different flexural rates. SUMMARY OF BAC...
