Reproduction in fishes is regulated by external environmental factors that trigger internal mechanisms into action. The final event of the reproductive cycle, the release of eggs and sperm resulting in spawning, can be controlled by either placing the fish in an appropriate environment or by changing the fish’s internal regulating factors with injected hormones or other substances. The internal...

Prolactin (PRL) has one of the broadest ranges of functions of any vertebrate hormone, and plays a critical role in regulating aspects of reproduction in widely divergent lineages. However, while PRL structure, mode of action and functions have been well-characterised in mammals, studies of other vertebrate lineages remain incomplete. As the most diverse group of vertebrates, fish offer a parti...

The neuroendocrine mechanism regulates reproduction through the hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis which is evolutionarily conserved in vertebrates. The HPG axis is regulated by a variety of internal as well as external factors. Serotonin, a monoamine neurotransmitter, is involved in a wide range of reproductive functions. In mammals, serotonin regulates sexual behaviors, gonadotropin rel...

This review aims at synthesizing the most relevant information regarding the neuroendocrine circuits controlling reproduction, mainly gonadotropin release, in teleost fish. In teleosts, the pituitary receives a more or less direct innervation by neurons sending projections to the vicinity of the pituitary gonadotrophs. Among the neurotransmitters and neuropeptides released by these nerve ending...

The endocrine regulation of vertebrate reproduction is achieved by the coordinated actions of several peptide neurohormones, tachykinin among them. To study the evolutionary conservation and physiological functions of neurokinin B (NKB), we identified tachykinin (tac) and tac receptor (NKBR) genes from many fish species, and cloned two cDNA forms from zebrafish. Phylogenetic analysis showed tha...

pattern of feeding and reproduction of amblypharyngodon mola (hamilton, 1822) was studied in two floodplain lakes of north 24 parganas districts of west bengal in india during 2011.  results indicated that the fish exhibited a predominantly herbivorous diet with algae as the main content of gut. a long, thin walled, coiled gut and closely packed filamentous gill racker suited this feeding habit...

Reproduction and spawning patterns of the king fish (Scomberomorus commerson) were studied in the Persian Gulf (Hormozgan Province) and Oman Sea from Oct 2006 to Sep 2007. A total of 1120 fish was collected from different landing sites along the Iranian waters. Yearly analysis of the reproductive stages and gonadosomatic index showed a single reproductive cycle beginning in March and continue...

The North American freshwater sunfish, Lepomis gibbosus (Centrarchidae), was found in a pond outside Oslo, Norway in October 2005. The large number of fish (>100) in the pond suggests successful reproduction. Two monogenean parasites, nonnative to Norway, were found on the gill filaments of the fish. The origin of the fish and associated parasites is not known.

Kisspeptin, a novel neuropeptide product of the Kiss1 gene, activates the G proteincoupled membrane receptor G protein-coupled receptor 54 (now termed Kiss1r). Over the last 15 years, the importance of the kisspeptin system has been the subject of much debate in the mammalian research field. At the heart of the debate is whether kisspeptin is an absolute upstream regulator of gonadotropin-relea...

Fish reproduction, recruitment, growth and mortality normally measured using fish length method for identifying the fish species population. Normally researchers in Malaysia buy the fish and measured length of fish one by one using simple fish measuring board made out of hardwood or acrylic plastic. This current method took longest time and very costly. In this paper, the researcher used differ...
