The article is concerned with hybrid amorphous polymers synthesized basing on epoxy oligomer of diglycide aliphatic ester of polyethylene glycol that was cured by polyethylene polyamine and lithium perchlorate salt. Structural peculiarities of organic-inorganic polymer composites were studied by differential scanning calorimetry, wide-angle X-ray spectra, infrared spectroscopic, scanning electr...

We introduce a new class of siloxane-based epoxy polymers for thin film optical waveguide applications. The thickness of spun-on films can be controlled by varying either spin speed or viscosity using solvents. Cured films exhibit excellent adhesion to silicon oxide and Al and excellent thermal and chemical stability. Waveguides of ~ 2 micron thickness on silicon oxide exhibit <0.2 dB/cm loss a...

page 62 Abstract: A fiber pullout test for examining controlled interfaces in fiber reinforced polymers has been designed and demonstrated. This test has been utilized in determining interfacial fracture toughness for sapphire/epoxy single fiber composite specimens. Some of these specimens incorporated a self-assembled monolayer at the sapphire/ epoxy interface as a means of adhesion control—th...

A method was developed for the preparation of microcapsules containing a reactive amine with potential applications in self-healing polymers. Amine core microcapsules were prepared by interfacial polymerization of an isocyanate and an amine stabilized by an inverse Pickering emulsion. Microcapsules were successfully isolated, dried, and redispersed in epoxy. Visualization of capsules in cured e...

Epoxy bonded steel plates (externally bonded reinforcemen: EBR) for the strengthening of concrete structures were introduced to the construction industry in the late 1960s, and the use of fibre reinforced polymers (FRPs) was introduced in the 1990s, which means that these techniques have already been used in construction for 50 and 25 years, respectively. In the first part of the paper, a histo...

Brillouin light scattering measurements have been used to study the stress induced modification in the elastic properties of two glass forming polymers: polybutadiene and epoxy-amine resin, prototypes of linear and network polymers, respectively. Following the usual thermodynamic path to the glass transition, polybutadiene has been studied as a function of temperature from the liquid well into ...

BACKGROUND Reducing the amount of water-soluble fermentation inhibitors like furfural is critical for downstream bio-processing steps to biofuels. A theoretical approach for tailoring absorption polymers to reduce these pretreatment contaminants would be useful for optimal bioprocess design. RESULTS Experiments were performed to measure aqueous furfural partitioning into polymer resins of 5 b...

An instrumented indentation method is developed for generating maps of time-dependent viscoelastic and time-independent plastic properties of polymeric materials. The method is based on a pyramidal indentation model consisting of two quadratic viscoelastic Kelvin-like elements and a quadratic plastic element in series. Closed-form solutions for indentation displacement under constant load and c...

Research in the field of shape memory polymers has recently witnessed the introduction of increasing complexity of material response, including such phenomena as triple/multishape behavior, temperature memory, and reversible actuation. Ordinarily, such complexity in physical behaviour is achieved through comparable complexity in material composition and synthesis. Seeking to achieve a triple sh...

A new epoxy-based ink is reported, which enables 3D printing of lightweight cellular composites with controlled alignment of multiscale, high-aspectratio fiber reinforcement to create hierarchical structures inspired by balsa wood. Young's modulus values up to 10 times higher than existing commercially available 3D-printed polymers are attainable, while comparable strength values are maintained.
