A novel hybrid material was fabricated from the Al–Ti system using high-pressure torsion up to 50 turns. Microstructural observations revealed intermetallic phases and mixing zones enriched in Ti, consisting of grains ~20 nm within an Al matrix. Microhardness measurements gave values higher than HPT-processed bulk aluminium alloy.

Genetic mechanisms regulating CNS progenitor function and differentiation are not well understood. We have used microarrays derived from a representational difference analysis (RDA) subtraction in a heterogeneous stem cell culture system to systematically study the gene expression patterns of CNS progenitors. This analysis identified both known and novel genes enriched in progenitor cultures. I...

The behavioural and cognitive effects of oligofructose-enriched inulin at the doses of 5 and 10 % in the diet, orally ingested daily during 2 weeks, were investigated using a functional observational battery (FOB) and the light extinction test in male Wistar rats. Control rats received a standard diet and were tested in the same test situations. The behavioural effects were assessed 2 d before ...

BACKGROUND Pluripotent stem cells represent one promising source for cellular cardiomyoplasty. In this study, we used cardiac magnetic resonance to examine the ability of highly enriched cardiomyocytes (CMs) derived from murine embryonic stem cells (ESC) to form grafts and improve contractile function of infarcted rat hearts. METHODS AND RESULTS Highly enriched ESC-CMs were obtained by induci...

It is reasonable to propose that gene expression profiles of purified stem cells could give clues for the molecular mechanisms of stem cell behavior. We took advantage of cDNA subtraction to identify a set of genes selectively expressed in mouse adult hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) as opposed to bone marrow (BM). Analysis of HSC-enriched genes revealed several key regulatory gene candidates, in...

A risk assessment of vegetation zone responses to climate change was conducted using the classical Holdridge life zone model on the Loess Plateau of Northwest China. The results show that there are currently ten vegetation zones occurring on the Loess Plateau (1950–2000), including alvar desert, alpine wet tundra, alpine rain tundra, boreal moist forest, boreal wet forest, cool temperate desert...

DNA replication programs have been studied extensively in yeast and animal systems, where they have been shown to correlate with gene expression and certain epigenetic modifications. Despite the conservation of core DNA replication proteins, little is known about replication programs in plants. We used flow cytometry and tiling microarrays to profile DNA replication of Arabidopsis thaliana chro...

OBJECTIVE To investigate the expression of CD133 and CD34 in different parts of glioblastoma and its margin and explore the invasive path of glioma stem cells within the tumor and surrounding tissue. METHODS The surgical specimens were collected from the core of mass, junctional zones between tumor and peritumoral edematous areas and edematous areas in 52 patients with glioblastoma. Immunohis...

Kelps are ecologically important seaweeds that dominate the subtidal zones of rocky coasts. In Northern Europe, Saccorhiza polyschides is a pioneer species suspected of outcompeting the harvested kelp, Laminaria digitata. To examine how the process of species competition affects species distribution and genetic diversity in coastal environments, we developed 10 polymorphic microsatellite marker...
