Dodgson’s election system elegantly satisfies the Condorcet criterion. However, determining the winner of a Dodgson election is known to be Θp 2 -complete ([HHR97], see also [BTT89]), which implies that unless P = NP no polynomial-time solution to this problem exists, and unless the polynomial hierarchy collapses to NP the problem is not even in NP. Nonetheless, we show that when the number of ...

propositions. But the current ascendancy of investigation of mental states and operations in terms of brain structures and processes makes talk of abstract propositions as antiquated as theories about souls or disease-causing humors. Moreover, philosophical theories of propositional belief have generated large numbers of insoluble puzzles, such as how it can be that a person can believe that Le...

This paper continues an earlier research of the authors on universal quadratic identities (QIs) minors quantum matrices. We demonstrate situations when QIs are provided, in a sense, by ones four special types (Plűcker, co-Plűcker, Dodgson and quasi-commutation relations flag co-flag interval minors).

Sparked by a remarkable result due to Hemaspaandra et al. [1], the voting rule attributed to Charles Dodgson (aka Lewis Carroll) has become one of the most studied voting rules in computational social choice. However, the computer science literature often neglects that Dodgson’s rule has some serious shortcomings as a choice procedure. This short note contains four examples revealing Dodgson’s ...

Charles L. Dodgson, who lectured on mathematics at Christ Church in Oxford University, constructed ciphers that were state of the art in his time. In poems and letters he demonstrated a great talent for creating acrostics and anagrams. In this paper I describe the ciphers closely and argue that their creation was intertwined with his word game inventions.  2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Voltaire said that Archimedes had more imagination than Homer. Unfortunately, as far as we know, Archimedes’s only use of it, outside of mathematics, was to condemn goldsmiths and to kill people. More peaceful uses of mathematicians’ imagination, to the outside of mathematics, in decreasing order of impact, were provided by Multi-Millionaire Richard Garfield, the Reverend Charles Dodgson, and M...
