A thick diamond film prepared by glow discharge plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition (CVD) was investigated by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The degeneration of the {111} faces into three {110} faces was found to be widespread. Both the {110} and {100} faces grow via a step mechanism, with the steps generally originating from the re-entrant corner ...

Donor-acceptor type light-harvesting molecular wires are covalently attached to a borondoped diamond surface via a combination of diazonium electrografting and Suzuki crosscoupling. For the Suzuki reaction, various catalytic systems are compared with respect to their imposed surface coverage. Combining 2-dicyclohexylphosphino-2’,6’-dimethoxybiphenyl (SPhos) and Pd(0), the diamond coverage impro...

In this work, we study the modification of hydrogenated diamond films deposited on silicon resulting from its exposure to DBr followed by an annealing above 600 K, using high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS). This procedure results in silicon carbide SiC formation within the diamond film, as evidenced by the observation of a loss peak at 117 meV and its first harmonic at 23...

This paper examines the RF heating of the contaminants on a diamond window. Both heating of an isolated internal graphite impurity, and of a thin film on the window surface, are discussed. Comparison with recent experiments is given. It is found that heating of isolated internal graphite impurities is unlikely to account for diamond window failure. Upon averaging over the entire window, the thi...

Electrical conductivity of a highly boron doped chemical vapor deposited diamond thin film has been studied at different temperatures under high electric field conditions. Current-voltage characteristics have been measured using pulsed technique to reduce thermal effects. Experimental results evidence deep impurity impact ionization avalanche in p-type diamond up to room temperature.

We demonstrate alteration in diamond-like carbon (DLC) film structure, chemistry and adhesion on steel, related to variation in the argon plasma pretreatment stage of plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition. We relate these changes to the alteration in substrate structure, crystallinity and chemistry due to application of an argon plasma process with negative self bias up to 600 V. Adhesion ...

The morphology, composition, and bonding character (carbon hybridization state) of continuous, ultra-thin (thickness ∼60 nm) nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) membranes are reported. NCD films were deposited on a silicon substrate that was pretreated using an optimized, two-step seeding process. The surface after each of the two steps, the as-grown NCD topside and the NCD underside (revealed by etc...

We have studied the nucleation and growth processes in a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) diamond film using a tomographic electron backscattering diffraction method (3D EBSD). The approach is based on the combination of a focused ion beam (FIB) unit for serial sectioning in conjunction with high-resolution EBSD. Individual diamond grains were investigated in 3-dimensions particularly with regar...

Control of the wetting property of diamond surface has been a challenge because of its maximal hardness and good chemical inertness. In this work, the micro/nanoarray structures etched into diamond film surfaces by a maskless plasma method are shown to fix a surface's wettability characteristics, and this means that the change in morphology is able to modulate the wettability of a diamond film ...

High aspect ratio diamond nanocone arrays are formed on freestanding diamond film by means of focused ion beam (FIB) milling technology and hot-filament chemical vapor deposition (HFCVD) method. The structure and phase purity of an individual diamond nanocone are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and micro-Raman spectroscopy. The result indicates that the diamond cones with hi...
