An improved power re-use technique is introduced for application to outphased microwave power amplifiers. The technique allows a significant portion of the wasted out-of-phase components of the signal to be returned to the power supply, resulting in substantial improvements in overall power-amplifier efficiency. A peak re-use RF-to-DC efficiency of 63% was obtained at 1.96 GHz.

Dc-dc power converters are employed in a variety of applications, including power supplies for personal computers, office equipment, spacecraft power systems, laptop computers, and telecommunications equipment, as well as dc motor drives. The input to a dc-dc converter is an unregulated dc voltage Vg. The converter produces a regulated output voltage V, having a magnitude (and possibly polarity...

A 40-dB dynamic range, dc–4-GHz parallel-summation logarithmic amplifier is presented in this paper. The amplifier realizes a piecewise approximation to an exact logarithmic response. A design procedure that yields breakpoints on the exact response is described, along with delay-matching networks for parallel-summation logarithmic amplifiers. The amplifier was constructed in a 35-GHz silicon bi...

Today’s wireless system requirements demand increasing performance from power amplifiers. The higher gain and output power available from today’s transistors reduce the number of amplifier stages, and improved efficiency decreases system DC power requirements and generated heat. But at these higher power and efficiency levels, power amplifier linearity needs to meet or exceed the requirements o...

The generation of RF/microwave power is required not only in wireless communications, but also in applications such as jamming, imaging, RF heating, and miniature dc/dc converters. Each application has its own unique requirements for frequency, bandwidth, load, power, efficiency, linearity, and cost. RF power is generated by a wide variety of techniques, implementations, and active devices. Pow...

Negative conductance voltage gain enhancement techniques which substantially increases the dc gain of an operational amplifier without degrading speed are discussed. Three fully differential CMOS op amps using the negative conductance gain enhancement technique are presented. Simulations show that for a 0.35um CMOS technology with a power supply of 3V, a dc gain of more than 94dB is achievable ...

Wide band code division multiple access (WCDMA) signals, transmitted by the base station high power amplifiers (HPAs), show high peak to average power ratios (PAPR), which results in nonlinear distortions. In this paper, using computer simulations effect of using a predistorted HPA on the symbol error rate (SER) of multi-user detectors in terms of output back-off (OBO) in the transmit power...

The transistor circuit research is aimed at problems of general interest in communication engineering. Fundamental principles of transistor circuit design and practical limitations imposed by available devices are being investigated for circuits useful in a wide variety of applications. Present studies include work on sweep generators, temperature effects in dc amplifiers, and methods of stabil...
