Passive acoustic monitoring was used to document the presence of singing humpback whales off the coast of Northern Angola, and opportunistically test for the effect of seismic survey activity in the vicinity on the number of singing whales. Two Marine Autonomous Recording Units (MARUs) were deployed between March and December 2008 in the offshore environment. Song was first heard in mid June an...

The usual approach to the acquisition of 2-D and 3-D seismic surveys is to use a recording template designed from the maximum target dips and depths. This template is used through out the survey area irrespective of changes in the dips, depths or propagation velocities of the targets. I propose to base the survey design on an initial structural and velocity model of the subsurface. The initial ...

Manual stratigraphic interpretation of modern 3-D seismic images is extremely timeconsuming. We present a method based on nonstationary predictive signal/noise separation for automatically recognizing the occurence of a predefined pattern in seismic images. The method is tested on 2-D synthetic and real seismic images, and is shown to reliably detect the presence of unconformities in both.

The acquisition footprint noise in migrated sections consists of migration artifacts associated with a discrete recording geometry. Such noise can corrupt the interpretation of seismic sections, especially for AVO studies, so it is critical to design an optimal seismic survey that generates the smallest footprint. Our previous work showed that the Seismic Array Theorem can be used to design bet...

SITUATION Almost indisputable belief that base isolation hardware should separate a building from shaking ground just by definition is extremely appealing. The examples are numerous. Sometimes, it was even stated that seismic forces in base isolated structures could be reduced by factor of 66 in comparison with conventional construction (Tajirian et al. 1990), though the degree of promised miti...

The structure of the upper mantle beneath the Australian continent is investigated using teleseismic shear wave splitting to extract seismic anisotropy. Measurements have been performed on data recorded at 190 sites with portable broadband seismic recorders, spanning almost the entire surface of the continent since 1992. The average time span of the various deployments, primarily designed for s...

Pletser et al. performed a seismic-refraction survey on Devon Island with the goal of assessing the feasibility of astronauts carrying out such operations on Mars to detect subsurface water. We demonstrate that the seismic analysis is fundamentally flawed. The survey performed in this test will likely bear little resemblance to future crewed geophysical surface operations, and better methods ex...

A 3D marine seismic survey of the Odoptu license area off northeastern Sakhalin Island, Russia, was conducted by DalMorNefteGeofizika (DMNG) on behalf of Exxon Neftegas Limited and the Sakhalin-1 consortium during mid-August through early September 2001. The key environmental issue identified in an environmental impact assessment was protection of the critically endangered western gray whale (E...

Pygmy rabbit behavior and above ground burrow characteristics were monitored during seismic exploration in northern Utah in the fall of 2008. Burrow entrance characteristics (height and width) were evaluated at distances up to 250 m from the geophone line before and after the seismic survey. Burrow heights after the seismic survey were significantly lower than pre-treatment measurements 25m fro...

Data loading and management 2D or 3D data in standard SEG-Y format is easily loaded with the wizard-based data loading tools Batch loading of 2D data is supported, and the EBCDIC character header is stored as the data is loaded, so this important piece of information is not lost Project can be 2D, 3D or a combination 2D seismic surveys are easily managed with program groups and multiple version...
