INTRODUCTION: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and cytomegalovirus (CMV) are herpesviruses, which account for the majority of oral viral infections. Herpes simplex virus, varicellazoster virus, and Epstein-Barr virus infections nearly always result from reactivation of latent virus, while cytomegalovirus infections, besides presenting as reactivated disease, are almost as likely to present as a primary...
BACKGROUND Since there is no effective treatment or vaccine against the congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) infection, knowledge and awareness of medical doctor's (MDs) especially family doctors are essential for preventive strategies and it also seems to be usually ignored by healthcare providers. Aim of this study was to investigate awareness of MDs about cCMV infection in Iran. METHODS A sin...
We have developed and tested a method for printing protein microarrays on glass slides and using these microarrays in a comparative fluorescence assay to detect TORCH infections. We generated protein microarrays by printing antibodies to simultaneously determine infections of TORCH (toxoplasmosis-rubella-cytomegalovirus-herpes) by detecting antibodies against Toxoplasma gondii, rubella virus, c...
To study genetically determined susceptibility to cytomegalovirus and herpes simplex virus infections in patients given renal transplants a prospective study was performed of 68 consecutive patients receiving their first cadaveric kidney allograft. The recipients positive for HLA-DRw6 showed a significantly increased incidence of active cytomegalovirus infection as early as the 10th week after ...
Cytomegalovirus is the most important pathogen affecting transplant recipients and causing significant morbidity and morbidity. The prevalence of CMV infections in transplant recipient varies from country to country. The aim of this study was to determine the prognostic value of PCR assay for CMV detection in patients before Keratoplasty. A total of 23 patient samples en...
Cytomegalovirus is the most common viral infection after kidney transplantation. Clinical presentations of cytomegalovirus infection range from asymptomatic infection to organ-specific involvement. Most symptomatic infections manifest as fever and cytopenia. The gastrointestinal tract is the most common site of tissue-invasive infection, often presenting as diarrhea or gastrointestinal bleeding...
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to simultaneously monitoring cytomegalovirus and human herpesvirus 6 active infections using nested-polymerase chain reaction and, together with clinical findings, follow the clinical status of patients undergoing liver transplant. INTRODUCTION The human β-herpesviruses, including cytomegalovirus and human herpesvirus 6, are ubiquitous among human populatio...

The measurement of the avidity of cytomegalovirus (CMV) immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies has been shown by several investigators to be useful in identifying and excluding primary CMV infections in pregnant women. In this work, we examined the diagnostic utility of reflex testing of CMV IgM-positive specimens from pregnant women by using a CMV IgG avidity assay. The utility of this approach was...
We describe a case of symptomatic primary Cytomegalovirus infection in a HIV-positive pregnant woman on antiretroviral treatment with a CD4 count >200 × 10(6)/l requiring intravenous ganciclovir. No adverse consequences from ganciclovir or evidence of congenital Cytomegalovirus infection were found.
