The target paper’s main point is that mentalism and, to this extent, mentalistic (e.g., cognitive) psychology can only be materialistic and, hence, cannot be dualistic. The commentaries to the paper are insightful and stimulating. A few call for corrections, the rest for further clarification. Most criticize the mind-brain identity theory. This criticism is beside the point, as I did not intend...

Preferences are becoming of greater interest in many areas of artificial intelligence, such as knowledge representation, multiagent systems, constraint satisfaction, decision making, and decision-theoretic planning. In the logic of preference there is a debate when a set of preferences should be consistent. For example, Bacchus and Grove [1996] criticize ceteris paribus preferences, because {p ...

If rape is evaluated as a serious wrong, can it also be defined as non-consensual sex (NCS)? Many do not see all instances of NCS as seriously wrongful. The aim of the present paper is to show how evolutionary algorithms can be applied to protein folding prediction. We start reviewing previous similar approaches that we criticize emphasizing the key issue of representation. A new evolutionary algorithm is described, based on the notion of distance matrix representation, together with a software package that implements it. Finally, experimental ...

In this paper I propose a reasonably sharp formulation of the temporal asymmetry of radiation. I criticize accounts that propose to derive the asymmetry from a low-entropy assumption characterizing the state of the early universe and argue that these accounts fail, since they presuppose the very asymmetry they are intended to derive. r 2006 Elsevier Ltd. I criticize two accounts of the temporal asymmetry of electromagnetic radiationÐthat of Huw Price, whose account centrally involves a reinterpretation of Wheeler and Feynman's in®nite absorber theory, and that of Dieter Zeh. I then offer some reasons for thinking that the purported puzzle of the arrow of radiation does not present a genuine puzzle in need of a solution.

Feldman et al. criticize the MacArthur Communicative Development Inventories (CDIs) as having too much variability, too little stability, and insufficient ability to predict early language delay. We present data showing that these characteristics of the CDI are authentic reflections of individual differences in early language development rather than measurement deficiencies. We also respond to ...
