in order to prepare polyurethane elastomers with acceptable physical properties and good biocompatibility, novel polyurethane networks were synthesized via curing reaction of epoxy-terminated polyurethane prepolymers (eups) with hexamethylene diamine. eups were prepared from reaction of glycidol with nco-terminated polyurethanes (itps). itps were also synthesized from reaction of one equivalent...

Objectives We aimed to develop a sustained release system for an anti-TNFa drug in treatment of chronic inflammatory arthritis. A novel form of intra-articularly injectable etanercept (ETN) loaded poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) or methoxy poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(ε-caprolactone)methoxy poly(ethylene glycol) (MPEG-PCL-MPEG) microspheres (patent pending) were prepared to provide long term controlle...

Novel complexation hydrogel nanospheres of poly(methacrylic acid-grafted-poly(ethylene glycol)) (P(MAA-gEG)) were prepared by dispersion polymerization to be used for protein delivery applications. Polymerization was conducted in solvents such as deionized water, ethanol/water, sodium hydroxide, hydrochloric acid, and acetic acid solutions. When polymerizing in deionized water we produced nanos...

A short, monodisperse additive (octa(ethylene glycol) monophenyl ether) functions to suppress aggregation of thermally and chemically denatured lysozyme. Control studies with shorter and non-amphiphilic derivatives revealed that the amphiphilic structure is essential, and octa(ethylene glycol) is nearly the minimum chain length for amphiphilic poly(ethylene glycol)s to stabilize proteins.

In the present work, a photopolymerized urethane-based poly(ethylene glycol) hydrogel is applied as a porous scaffold material using indirect solid freeform fabrication (SFF). This approach combines the benefits of SFF with a large freedom in material selection and applicable concentration ranges. A sacrificial 3D poly(ε-caprolactone) structure is generated using fused deposition modeling and u...

Improving the solubility of non-soluble herbal materials is an issue of interest in cell culture based experiments. Evaluating the biological activity of these materials could become possible with the aid of cosolvents/surfactants which obviously should have little or no cytotoxic activity. In the present study, the cytotoxic activity of six cosolvents/surfactants: ethanol, methanol, Tween 20 a...

Erythrocytes from multiple sclerosis patients differ significantly (p less than 0.005) from those from controls with regard to hydrophobic affinity partition in two-polymer aqueous-phase systems containing dextran, poly(ethylene glycol) and poly (ethylene glycol)-fatty acid esters. The most likely source of the abnormality is the cell membrane.

We introduce a two-dimensional method for mass spectrometry in solution that is based on the interaction between a nanometer-scale pore and analytes. As an example, poly(ethylene glycol) molecules that enter a single alpha-hemolysin pore cause distinct mass-dependent conductance states with characteristic mean residence times. The conductance-based mass spectrum clearly resolves the repeat unit...

Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) has been used to investigate the solution properties of four model polymers, two poly-amino acids [poly(lysine) and poly (proline)], and two water-soluble synthetic polymers [poly (acrylic acid) and poly(ethylene oxide)]. In each case, one of the two polymers is charged, while the other is neutral. SANS measurements were made in the semi-dilute concentratio...
